5 Highest Selected High School 2021 MLB Draft Picks

As is the same every year, top high school prospects took center stage by being some of the highest players picked in the 2021 MLB Draft. When looking at the top prep prospects selected within the Top 10 picks overall, the talent and potential with this group is evident, and it’s clear why this group with easily transition from high school and travel baseball to the MLB. 

RHP Jackson Jobe – No. 3 Overall (Detroit Tigers)

The highest selected high school player this year was Jackson Jobe, a 6’2″ right-hander from Heritage Hall (OK). The 2021 Gatorade High School Player of the Year in the state of Oklahoma, Jobe finished his senior season with a 9-0 record and a 0.13 ERA across 51.2 innings pitched. Rated as the No. 4 player in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game, Jobe’s spin rates are considered elite, and the 19-year-old instantly becomes the Tigers No. 3 prospect. 

SS Marcelo Mayer – No. 4 Overall (Boston Red Sox)

Widely considered as the top overall prospect available, Marcelo Mayer fell to No. 4 overall to the Boston Red Sox. The Eastlake High School (CA) standout was rated as the No. 2 player in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game, as well as the No. 1 overall draft prospect by MLB Pipeline. Instantly Boston’s top prospect, Mayer is also instantly one of the top overall prospects in baseball. 

SS Jordan Lawlar – No. 6 Overall (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Despite being ranked as the No. 3 overall player in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game, many believed that Jordan Lawlar was the top high school prospect overall. The 2021 Texas Gatorade High School Player of the Year, Lawlar was a standout on the Perfect Game national scene for years. Like Mayer, Lawlar is also considered an elite shortstop, as well as Arizona’s top prospect.

LHP Frank Mozzicato – No. 7 Overall (Kansas City Royals)

One of the draft shocks from the first round was Frank Mozzicato being selected No. 7 overall by the Royals. One of the highest drafted pitchers ever from the state of Connecticut, the left-hander was rated as the No. 51 overall prospect in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game, as well as the No. 39 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. The current Royals No. 9 prospect, Mozzicato has the potential to be one of the best arms from this draft led by his impressive curveball. 

OF Benny Montgomery – No. 8 Overall (Colorado Rockies)

The fifth high schooler selected was Benny Montgomery, an elite outfielder from Red Land High School (PA). Rated as the No. 8 overall prospect in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game, Montgomery was a constant standout at Perfect Game national events due to his elite combination of power and speed. Selected as the 2021 Pennsylvania Gatorade High School Player of the Year, Montgomery has the potential to be one of the top overall players from this draft, and begins his professional career as Colorado’s No. 2 prospect.
