MLB Draft: An Update on the Leading Recent High School Picks

We recently took a look at where the last 10 top MLB Draft picks from Florida were set to begin the 2022 season. Now we look at where the last 10 overall top MLB Draft picks from the high school ranks are. (Prospect rankings courtesy of MLB Pipeline)

2021 – Jackson Jobe (Heritage Hall, OK)

Jobe, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, is rated as the No. 39 prospect in baseball, as well as No. 3 in Detroit’s system. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has yet to make his professional debut, but will do so at some point this season in the lower levels of the Tigers organization.

2020 – Robert Hassell III (Independence, TN)

Hassell, the No. 36 overall prospect in baseball, was selected as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, where he is currently the organization’s No. 2 prospect. The speedy outfielder recently began the 2022 season in High-A with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, with a promotion to Double-A likely at some point this summer.

2019 – Bobby Witt Jr (Colleyville Heritage, TX)

Baseball’s current No. 1 overall prospect, Witt is the former No. 2 overall pick from the 2019 MLB Draft, where he was selected by the Kansas City Royals. After a phenomenal 2021 season, Witt recently made the Royal’s Opening Day roster coming out of spring training, and is now in the major leagues with Kansas City.

2018 – Jarred Kelenic (Waukesha West, WI)

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, Kelenic was traded later that year as part of a multi-player deal to the Seattle Mariners. He was oe of Seattle’s top prospects before making his MLB debut last season and appearing in 93 games. He began the 2022 campaign in the big leagues with the Mariners.

2017 – Royce Lewis (JSerra, CA)

The No. 1 overall pick from the 2017 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, Lewis is also currently rated as the No. 45 overall prospect in baseball. Minnesota’s top prospect missed the entire 2021 season with an injury, and recently began 2022 in Triple-A with the St. Paul Saints.

2016 – Mickey Moniak (La Costa Canyon, CA)

Philadelphia’s current No. 17 prospect, Moniak was originally selected by the Phillies with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. An outfielder who has spent time in the major leagues with the Phillies each of the last two seasons, Moniak is currently on the 10-day IL.

2015 – Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary, FL)

Rodger, the No. 3 overall pick from the 2015 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, made his major league debut back in 2019 and has remained in the big leagues since. Entering his fourth MLB season, Rodgers could be set for a career year in 2022 after hitting 15 home runs in 102 games a year ago.

2014 – Brady Aiken (Cathedral Catholic, CA)

Aiken was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians, but did not sign with the organization, and was instead drafted No. 17 overall in 2015 by the Houston Astros. He reached as high as Low-A in the Houston organization, and has not pitched professionally since 2019.

2013 – Kohl Stewart (St. Pius X, TX)

Selected fourth overall in 2013 by the Minnesota Twins, Stewart made his major league debut with the organization back in 2018. The right-hander also saw time at the major league level with the Chicago Cubs during the 2021 season, and is now a free agent.

2012 – Carlos Correa (Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, PR)

The No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Astros in 2012, Correa spent the first seven years of his MLB career in Houston, where he appeared in 752 games and earned numerous accolades. One of baseball’s top free agents this past offseason, Correa recently signed with the Minnesota Twins, where he is the club’s starting shortstop.
