ITG Next’s October 2025 Georgia Male Athlete of the Month is Colquitt County High School quarterback Cohen Lawson.
He is in his second season as Colquitt County’s starting quarterback, and the sophomore is the latest in a long line of Packer signal-callers who have led Colquitt County to a championship.
Last season, in Lawson’s first year as the starter for Colquitt County head coach Sean Calhoun‘s team, he guided the Pack to an 8-4 overall record, including a 4-1 region mark in Region 1-6A, good enough for the region title. He led the Packers to the second round of the state playoffs, including a Round 1 win over Wheeler High School’s Wildcats.
He completed 83-of-155 pass attempts last season for 1,099 yards in 10 games, including nine touchdowns. He also ran for two touchdowns in 2024, with 140 total yards rushing.
So far this season, Lawson has led the Packers to a 7-2 record through the first nine games of the season, including a 3-1 region record. He has already thrown 14 touchdown passes and passed for 1,441 yards. He has rushed for another two touchdowns. His Packers are one of three teams that are in the hunt for the region title with the upcoming final weekend coming up at the time of writing.
If Colquitt County can win its final regular season contest and somehow navigate its way to a region title, it will be the fourth straight region championship and the second straight with Lawson leading the offense.
Packers offensive coordinator John Cooper said his sophomore QB seems to be finding his groove at just the right time of the season.
“Cohen is having a good sophomore campaign, and although we have had our ups and downs as an offense, Cohen is currently playing his best ball,” Cooper said. “His improvement is evident from the start of the year until now. His decision-making, confidence, and leadership have all taken big steps forward.”
No matter how talented a player is, it’s tough to lead a Region 1-6A team with the winning culture and expectations of a team like Colquitt County, especially as an underclassman. a fact that is not lost on Calhoun.
“It is hard to play as a freshman and a sophomore at Colquitt County and in this region along with Class 6A football, yet Cohen has done just that and continues to trend in the correct direction,” Calhoun said. “Cohen has grown by leaps and bounds compared to last year. That’s the natural progression you want any player to have and especially at the quarterback position. His decision-making and overall knowledge of the game has vastly improved, and playing experience is the main reason for that.”
The Colquitt County head coach spoke of how important it is having the right guy playing quarterback.
“When you have good quarterback play, you always have a chance to win games, and Cohen has led us to a bunch of victories,” Calhoun said. “Hopefully, he’ll lead us to many more.”
