ITG Next’s September 2025 Georgia Male Athlete of the Month is Worth County High School senior Chance Sims.
He is a middle linebacker for the Rams’ football team and has played a big part in Worth County High School’s success this season.
Through the Rams’ first half of the season, Sims has 49 total tackles, including two quarterback sacks, and three interceptions.
He has helped the Worth County Rams remain undefeated through their first seven games of the season, including snatching the game-winning interception in the Rams’ thrilling overtime win against Thomasville.
Sims and his defensive mates have not allowed their opponents to score in four of their six games.
It’s not a surprise for Rams head coach Jeff Hammond to see the high level that Sims is playing at so far this season.
“Chance’s intensity really showed up early,” Hammond said. “He was willing to do whatever was asked of him as good as he could do it.”
That intensity has rubbed off on his teammates, and they seem motivated and inspired by the play of Sims.
“All of the players have responded to his motor,” Hammond said. “He gives 100% on every rep. He’s a true team player, and he tries to elevate his teammates by example and encouragement.”
Sims explained his responsibilities on the field, which includes making sure he’s in the right position to make plays and putting his teammates in the right position as well.
“My job is to make sure that every gap I’m responsible for is filled, and that my linemen know if they’re getting a Rip (right) or a Liz (left) call, and to keep the boys together when adversity hits,” Sims said in his team’s play-calling language.
Sims should be well-versed in football lingo. He’s been playing as long as he can remember, and he’s played all over the field.
“I started playing contact football when I was 5 years old, and I have played some of everything,” Sims said. “I’ve played kicker, running back, defensive end, wide receiver, and, of course, linebacker.”
He also said that football has been his main focus growing up, which means he really didn’t try to find time to play anything else.
“I only played football growing up, but I did like basketball for a little while,” Sims said.
Does he still play basketball?
“No, basketball just wasn’t for me,” he said.
Sims said he would love to have a chance to play college football – and beyond – if given the opportunity.
“It would be a dream come true to play at any college and in the NFL,” Sims said.
If Chance Sims continues to play like he has so far this season, that may become more than just a dream for the Worth County High School defensive standout.
