As things begin to settle down a bit after a week of several Georgia high school football coaching changes, with coaches leaving to take what they hope will be better opportunities with their new football programs, ITG Next thought we’d take a look at who wound up where. We’ll give you our thoughts on which programs made the best hires, which coaches landed at the schools that will give them the best opportunity to succeed, and which coaching change turned out to be the best overall of all of the coaching musical chairs.
Of course, it’s all speculation as to which schools made the best hire and which of the coaches has the best opportunity to win a state championship at their new school.
Coaches will need to get their staffs in place, which could mean trying to convince former assistants to come join them at their new football home or convincing assistants to stay with their new boss.
Coaching Changes Recap
For those of you who somehow missed the wall-to-wall reporting of coaching changes, here is a review of the changes.
- Tucker Pruitt left the Appling County Pirates after just one season in Baxley to take over the head coaching job at Camden County. He led the Pirates to an 8-4 record, including an undefeated 4-0 region record, giving Appling County the Region 3-2A Championship.
- Byron Slack leaves Cook High School to become the new head coach at Brunswick High School. Slack departs Adel after spending the past four seasons as the Hornets’ head coach.
- Josh Niblett left Gainesville after a somewhat successful four-year run with the Red Elephants to head to the college ranks, where he’ll join Deion Sanders at Colorado as the Buffaloes’ tight ends coach.
- Santavious Bryant leaves Grayson, where he led the Rams to a state championship in 2024. Bryant was an assistant at Gainesville before taking over the Grayson football program.
- Scott Roberts leaves Swainsboro to take over a struggling Wayne County program.
- Beau Johnson leaves Coffee High School, where he served as the Trojans’ tight ends/H-back coach, according to head coach Mike Coe.
- Clinch County head coach Jim Dickerson is stepping down after coming out of retirement two years ago to coach the Panthers for a second stint.
- The new head coach at Clinch County will be Rance Morgan, a school administrator and former offensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2019. That was the last time Morgan coached football before deciding to join the school’s administrative office as assistant principal. Morgan will remain in that position while serving as Clinch County’s head football coach.
- Rome coach John Reid is retiring after serving as the Wolves’ head coach for the past 11 seasons. Reid led the Wolves to two state championships, including the school’s first in 2016.
