Here are our Top 10 performers from Week 1 of the 2025 Georgia high school football season.
Top Overall Performances
McEachern safety Casey Barner had three touchdowns, including a 98-yard kickoff return, a 40-yard touchdown reception on a flea-flicker, double reverse, trick play; and a direct snap on a designed fake punt that he took 69 yards to the endzone for his third touchdown of the night. He also averaged 19 yards per return on seven punt returns.
Top Offensive Performances
Houston County quarterback Ryan Maxwell completed 23-of-32 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns, the last of which came on a 17-yard pass with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game to give the Bears a 31-24 victory over the Brookwood Broncos in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic.
Grayson quarterback Travis Burgess led the Rams to a big win at Collins Hill with his passing and rushing skills. Burgess threw for 133 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 96 yards and one TD to lead the offensive attack against Collins Hill.
Camden County quarterback Will Jackson completed 14-of-18 passes for 173 yards and five TDs to lead the Wildcats to a 44-35 win over Brunswick.
Coffee running back KJ DeBruce ran for four TDs with 162 yards rushing on 20 carries to help lead Coffee to a 28-14 win over Bainbridge.
Top Defensive Performances
Walton defensive back and athlete MJ Burnett, a junior, had three interceptions against McEachern, including a 71-yard pick-6 that kept the Raiders in the game at the time. He also had seven tackles.
Lowndes defensive back Anthony Martin had 10 tackles and broke up two passes to help Lowndes win their opener versus Jenkins.
Top Special Teams Performances
Colquitt County kicker Josh Scroggins, playing in his first football game at any level, kicked the game-winning, 37-yard field goal for Colquitt County to push the Packers past Benedictine 27-24. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 on extra point attempts.
Houston County safety Jordan Smith took the game’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to kickstart the Bears’ effort against Brookwood in a 31-24 victory in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. Smith also had nine tackles from his safety spot.
Lee County defensive back Montravious Clay, a sophomore, had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to help lead Lee County to a Week 1 win against Warner Robins at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
