Lee County Trojan Takes Gold

At the age of 4, Aaron Maxfield began his career in the USA Wrestling Program. On Saturday, February 13, 2016, the Lee County senior’s hard work and dedication paid off once again, as an 8-2 victory in the GHSA Class AAAAAA State Championship against Ahkeem Lewis of Central Gwinett High School left him as the last man standing.

He was once labeled “undersized”. So he hit the gym. Lived in the weight room. Devoted countless hours to his craft. Now, in his final high school season, he has earned a new label: state champion.

Going undefeated in four tournament matches, Maxfield became just the third wrestler to win a state title in Trojan history. His 37 pins on the year set a school record (beating his former record of 35), and he finished his senior season with a 59-6 record. His first-round matchup with Rockdale’s Jordan Nelson only lasted 27 seconds. His second- and third-round contests (against Brookwood’s Kendrick Banks and Lambert’s Payton Mitchell) ended 6-4, in Trojan favor; however, both took multiple overtime periods, as they were tied after regulation.

Featured in the December issue of our South Georgia magazine, Maxfield voiced to us the importance of confidence and belief in himself. He had been defeated before, but he was determined to let that defeat be no more than a memory. And on that Saturday in February, at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Georgia, he etched his name into Trojan lore.

The staff of In the Game Sports Network extends its congratulations to Aaron, and best wishes for your future beyond graduation!
