Knocking on the Door: 6 Top 2022 MLB Prospects

Last week MLB Pipeline offered an update of its MLB prospects list, which details the Top 100 players in the minor leagues who hold “prospect” status. Here is a look at six of those top 2022 MLB prospects, all ranked within the Top 10 overall, including their high school backgrounds and what they have done so far this season.

Gunnar Henderson (Baltimore Orioles)

No. 2 on the lost of top 2022 MLB prospects is Henderson, who was considered the top player in Alabama out of high school and was selected in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles out of Morgan Academy. Now MLB’s No. 2 overall prospect, Henderson is knocking on the door of the big leagues with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, slashing a combined .291/.413/.527 for the year with 19 HR, 75 RBI, and 20 SB across 109 games.

Corbin Carroll (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Another name from that 2019 MLB Draft was Carroll, a first-rounder to the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Lakeside School in Washington. Also knocking on the door of the big leagues with Triple-A Reno, Carroll, MLB’s No. 3 prospect, is in the middle of a phenomenal 2022 season, slashing .309/.427/.616 with 24 HR, 62 RBI, and 31 SB across 92 games.

Grayson Rodriguez (Baltimore Orioles)

Yes, the Orioles have two of the top five prospects in baseball, both of whom are currently at the Triple-A level. Rodriguez, MLB’s top pitching prospect at No. 4 overall, was a first-round pick by the Orioles back in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Central Heights High School in Texas. He currently holds a 2.09 ERA across 11 starts this season.

Anthony Volpe (New York Yankees)

The top prospect for the New York Yankees, Volpe rounds out the top five at No. 5. Currently slashing .255/.354/.477 with 18 HR, 60 RBI, and 44 SB across 107 games in Double-A Somerset, Volpe was a first-round pick by New York in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Delbarton School in New Jersey.

Jordan Walker (St. Louis Cardinals)

Selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the Cardinals out of Decatur High School in Georgia, Walker is MLB’s No. 6 overall prospect. Walker has slashed a combined .307/.390/.523 with 17 HR, 58 RBI, and 17 SB across 102 games in Double-A this season.

Marcelo Mayer (Boston Red Sox)

This list of top 2022 MLB Prospects concludes here with Mayer, baseball’s No. 8 overall prospect with the Boston Red Sox. Selected No. 4 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Eastlake High School in California, Mayer has slashed a combined .269/.389/.478 with 12 HR, 47 RBI, and 16 SB across 81 games this season.
