Is a 7A Three-Peat Possible for the Thompson Warriors?
There is no denying who the top team has been in Alabama high school football for the past two-to-three years – it’s the Thompson Warriors. Winners of the past two 7A state championships, the Warriors have dominated 7A the past two seasons and have thrown their name into the discussion for the top high school football team in the country entering this season.
With their past success evident, just how good will they be in 2021? Already owners of a 2-0 record, Thompson has outscored their opponents a combined 110-0 so far this season, and they appear well on their way to putting themselves in a position to complete the first-ever 7A three-peat in Alabama high school football history.
Is this three-peat possible though for the Warriors? While winning one state title is difficult enough, Thompson has already managed to win two against some of the toughest competition the state has to offer. Currently projected as the favorites to win a third, you don’t have to look far as to why.
When looking at the offense first, it starts with 7A Back of the Year in quarterback Conner Harrell. A four-star North Carolina commit, Harrell threw for over 3,500 yards and 42 TDs a year ago and has already thrown for 10 touchdowns through two games this season.
Joining Harrell offensively is a strong offensive line, as well as multiple weapons to throw to, including multiple running backs, as well as a deep receiver group headlined by Ryan Peppins, Jaylen Ward, Justin Pegues, and David Moultry.
The Warrior defense has strengths all over headlined by their front seven that features two five-star recruits in the state’s No. 1 player Jeremiah Alexander and junior Peter Woods, as well as linebacker Jax Van Zandt.
With the talent already evident on the defensive side of the ball, the secondary is arguably the strength of the Thompson defense headlined by five-star junior Tony Mitchell and four-star Trequon Fegans.
So, will Thompson be able to three-peat in 7A this season? With the talent and depth the Warriors possess on both sides of the ball, it’s clear why Thompson is considered the 7A favorite once again.
Yes, there will certainly be challenges along the way in teams such as Hoover, Hewitt-Trussville, Central-Phenix City, and 2020 7A runner-up Auburn. While none of these games will be easy by any means, the Warriors’ talent and depth alone make them a favorite this season and potentially one of the most talented Alabama high school football teams that we have seen in recent memory.
