How Former Alabama High School Quarterbacks Performed in College Football Week 1
As Week 1 of the 2021 college football season has officially passed, we can now look back at how each team and player looks after their first game action of the season. When looking back at how former Alabama high school football players performed this past weekend, there were four notable quarterbacks who saw action in both starting and reserve roles.
Here is a look at each of these four players, and how each and their teams performed in their season opener.
Bo Nix – Auburn
Undoubtedly the state’s top former quarterback that shined the most during Week 1 of the college football season was Auburn’s Bo Nix. Nix completed 20 of his 22 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, as well as carrying the ball three times for 32 yards in Auburn’s 60-10 win Saturday over Akron. The former Pinson Valley star was listed as a five-star recruit out of high school in the Class of 2019, and won both Alabama’s Mr. Football and Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year back in 2018.
Taulia Tagovailoa – Maryland
Not far behind Nix was Tagovailoa who completed 26 of 36 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns in Maryland’s 30-24 win over West Virginia, while also rushing six times for three yards. Tagovailoa starred at Thompson during the 2018 season where he led the Warriors to the AHSAA 7A state championship game in a phenomenal season. During the 2018 campaign, Tagovailoa was named First-Team All-State for Class 7A, as well as the Polynesian High School Football Co-Player of the Year.
Paul Tyson – Alabama
Tyson saw action during Alabama’s 44-13 win over Miami Saturday where he appeared in a reserve role in the fourth quarter. In limited action, Tyson completed his only pass for a gain of 10 yards. Tyson enjoyed a storied career at Hewitt-Trussville where he was named Second-Team All-State during the 2018 season for Class 7A.
Jack West – Stanford
West saw significant action in Stanford’s 24-7 loss to Kansas State, completing eight of his 12 passes for 76 yards and two interceptions. A former Saraland standout, West is a candidate to start at quarterback for the Cardinal going forward.
Going forward, Nix and Tagovailoa will continue to be the starting quarterback for their respective teams, while Tyson and West will see action at times as well. Each of these former Alabama high school stars have gotten off to strong starts to their 2021 seasons, and will be players to watch going forward.
