Key Losses
Quarterback Hayden Hayes will not be returning to the Sandcrabs for his senior season, said new head coach Mike Klein. Hayes has transferred to Flagler Palm Coast.
Hayes completed 128-of-198 pass attempts last year (65% completion) for 1,787 yards passing and 18 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He also rushed for 426 yards and six touchdowns.
Another key offensive player not returning to Seabreeze for 2024 is running back and slot receiver Denali Campbell, who has transferred to Spruce Creek.
Last season Campbell had 450 yards rushing and 753 yards receiving on offense, and he made 35 tackles and four interceptions from his defensive back spot.
Who’s Back
Seabreeze welcomes back one of the top kickers in Florida in senior Drew McNerney, who had four field goals of 40 yards or more last season, including a 48-yard game winner. At least three other successful kicks were from 32 yards, 37 yards, and 37 yards out, respectively. He also had at least two successful onside kicks to secure wins for his Seabreeze team.
Other key returners include senior defensive back Jake Deising, senior wide receiver and defensive back TJ Sampson, senior offensive lineman Luke Cloer, and senior tight end and defensive end Brody Boda.
What to Expect
Klein comes to the Sandcrabs from DeLand High School, where he served as the school’s defensive coordinator. He is the third Seabreeze head coach in as many years and is ready to bring stability to the team.
“We are implementing a new culture here,” Klein said. “We lost our starting quarterback (Hayes) from last year, so we’re revamping the offense to fit our personnel. We want to play sound, disciplined football with a stout defense and great special teams play.”
Klein said that outstanding kicker McNerney will serve as the centerpiece for their special teams.
Klein said that although no decision has been made on a new quarterback yet, his goals for the offense are straightforward this season.
“I want to establish a well-balanced offense that can establish the ground game and wear out the other team,” he said.
Prediction
Klein will bring immediate improvement to Seabreeze: 7-4 overall record in 2024.
