The Future Looks “Bright” for Mammoth Middle Schooler

Over the last few decades we have been treated to hardwood imports ranging in skill sets and abilities.  Today’s viewers are lucky enough to be able to keep watch on international stars such as Dirk Nowitzki (Germany), Tony Parker (France), Al Horford (Dominican Republic), and brothers Marc and Pau Gasol (Spain).  Previous generations were able to see stars like Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria), Manute Bol (Sudan), and Dikembe Mutombo (Congo) control the paint with their intimidating size.  One thing is for sure; the game of basketball is worldwide, and talent comes from all countries and walks of life.

The game is all about using what you have to your advantage, and the cream of the crop is able to do that so well.  The Gasol brothers have found a seamless mesh of inside and mid-range scoring to complement their stellar defensive abilities, Tony Parker is a flash on the court, using his smaller stature to his advantage, and Nowitzki has made exemplary use of the perfect combination of size and basketball IQ.

It is always said that it is never too early to chase your dream.  And keeping in line with that mantra is young Bright Okongwu of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Only 13 years old, he is beginning to see national attention because of his work ethic and ability.  Standing at a monstrous 6’10” and weighing in at 250 pounds, the Nigerian native can already be seen in various YouTube videos, honing his skills on outdoor courts as he attempts to make his name known in the basketball world.

So what makes Okongwu so special?  There are plenty of near-seven-footers running the courts around the world.  But this young man (and we put emphasis on “young”) who suits up for Calvary Christian Academy, is only 13 years old.  Currently in seventh grade, the mountain of a teenager is still shaping his body, let alone his game.  His coaches are already raving at his ability to learn quickly and keep up with his smaller, faster teammates.  And, a rarity for big men in the game, his coaches also seem to already be enamored with his soft touch around the rim.

Only time will tell what Bright Okongwu can accomplish.  But what is already known is that, at only 13 years of age, this ball player is leaving a huge imprint on the game.  Remember the name; you could get be getting an early look at a jewel of the Class of 2021.
