Key Losses
ATH Eli Campbell is one of a small group of graduates who leave behind a legacy of great football at Seabreeze. Campbell made his last season at the Daytona school one to remember as he contributed in all phases of the game. Offensively, he caught 33 passes for 641 yards and 7 TDs, while over on the defense, Campbell racked up 90 tackles, including 11 TFL. In his three seasons as a Seabreeze DB, Campbell pulled down 4 INT and had 7 fumble recoveries, including one he returned for a TD. He also blocked 5 punts last season, and he had 6 total blocked punts in his career, as well as a blocked FG. Campbell is headed to Wofford to continue his football career.
QB Sam Gonzales will play at Valdosta State after a Seabreeze career that saw him throw for 1,249 yards and 9 TDs and rush for 528 yards and 8 TDs. As a receiver, Gonzales caught 4 TD passes. Two-way standout Carson Olsen was a safety and WR, and he leaves with 35 tackles, a QB sack, and 2 TD receptions.
Who’s Back
Returning to greet new head football coach Lester Davis is a host of talented players he hopes can help him get this first season off on the right track following a four-win season in 2022. Junior QB Hayden Hayes will return to guide the offense, and he has already committed to Tennessee-Chattanooga (UTC). Last season Hayes passed for 619 yards and 6 TDs.
Another junior returnee is ATH Denali Campbell, who Davis says has offers from Valdosta State and Bethune Cookman, with more offers expected to come his way in 2023. Senior center Aiden Ford is back, along with Stetson commit Micah Carr and Chandler Mitzo, who transferred from Deltona during the offseason. He is committed to Florida International.
What to Expect
Davis is taking over at his alma mater for his first head coaching job. He told ITG Next that he has three main goals for the season: “I want to establish a culture of expecting to win,” Davis said. “That is important to me in year one. I also want to establish a relationship with my players.” His third goal, he said, is “to make the playoffs in year one here. There’s no reason we can’t do that.”
Davis said there is one team the 2023 Seabreeze football team must beat: Mainland. “The district goes through Mainland, and if we want to win the district – and we do – then we must beat Mainland,” he said.
Prediction
Coach Davis has the firepower of talent to win now. I think he will. 8-4 in 2023.
Game to Watch
Mainland on October 27.
