Georgia High School Girls Basketball Top 25: Classes 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A

With the end of the 2023 Georgia high school girls basketball season, ITG Next gives you our final Top 25 rankings.

The Diana Collins-led Brookwood Lady Broncos were at the top of our preseason Top 25 and ran the length of the season while maintaining that same No. 1 spot. 

There were some great stories along the way in 2023, especially the Clinch County Lady Panthers, who were not on anyone’s list of potential state championship contenders, but that’s why they play the game.

Congratulations to all our GHSA girls basketball 2023-24 state champions: Brookwood, River Ridge, Kell, Griffin, Hebron Christian, Mt. Paran, St. Francis, and Clinch County.

With the GHSA finals set to begin this week, we give you our next-to-last Georgia high school girls basketball rankings. Our final girls Top-25 will be released next week, along with the final boys rankings.

Will the Brookwood girls be able to end the season where they began – on top? The Hebron Christian girls are right on their tails at No. 2, with their unbeaten streak up to 31 straight.

It’s good to see that our ranking of the top teams in the state was right on par with the level of play heading into the state championships: Our top six teams from two weeks ago are all headed to the state title game in their respective classes, including Brookwood’s matchup against the No. 3 Norcross Lady Blue Devils.

To further justify our picking prowess, consider this: 10 of the top 15 teams we selected two weeks ago are playing for a state championship. Hey, it ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up.

With the 2023 GHSA basketball regular season and region tournaments in the books, our focus, along with the teams and their fans, now moves on to the state playoffs, where upsets can and do happen. Our Georgia high school girls basketball rankings have been updated, and we’ll be watching closely as the teams begin to jockey for a run at the state championship, which will take place at Macon’s CentrePlex, the GHSA’s longtime host venue for crowning the state’s top team in each classification. Eight state champions will be selected in the Middle Georgia city March 8-11.

The Brookwood girls remain where they started as the state’s top overall team in our final regular-season Top 25. The Hebron Christian girls not only remain at the No. 2 spot, but they are also the state’s only undefeated team with 27 straight wins. Defending Class 3A state champion Lumpkin County was upset by Wesleyan in the Region 7-3A tournament by a 10-point margin and thus fell to No. 18.

There were a few surprises in the region tournaments, several of which landed teams in or out of the Top 25. Making their debut in the rankings are teams who earned their way with solid performances in their region tournaments. The aforementioned Wesleyan Lady Wolves come in at No. 17, followed by Elbert County (22), Rockdale County (23), and McEachern (24). The biggest mover in this week’s poll is Norcross; the red-hot Lady Blue Devils leap 13 spots and land in the Top 3.

As the regular season heads into the home stretch, teams are looking to put together momentum for a run in the region tournaments. A few programs are playing their best basketball of the season at just the right time. One of those teams is Lovejoy, which is riding an 11-game winning streak, including a big win over St. Francis. That streak of double-digit wins pays off for the Wildcats, as they debut at No. 12 in this week’s Georgia high school girls basketball rankings, while teams 1 through 11 remain in the same spot as the last update. Brookwood stays at No. 1, where it has been since our preseason Top-25 began.

Other teams who were rewarded for their winning brand of basketball included Union Grove, Baldwin, and Luella. It’s not quite March yet, but you can bet we’ll have plenty of madness come around when the statewide tournament kicks off following the region tournaments.

The latest ITG Next Georgia high school girls basketball rankings welcomes four new teams to the Top-25. Montgomery County makes the highest debut, entering the poll at No. 18, with Banks County following at 19. Woodward Academy and Rabun County enter the rankings at 21st and 23rd, respectively.

The Brookwood Lady Broncos, led by senior guard Diana Collins, just keep on rolling to remain in the same position they have held over the past two rankings: at the top. Coach Courtney Mincey’s team seems to be peaking at just the right time, heading into the home stretch of the regular season and on to the region tournament.

Coach Gene Durden and his Buford Lady Wolves make the biggest move among our ranked teams, moving up a whopping 12 spots from their previous ranking of 15th to the No. 3 spot this week. Keep an eye on the Buford girls – they have a great nucleus and a veteran coach in Durden who can put them in a position to be in the mix there at the end.

Hebron Christian remains at its familiar No. 2 spot, staying right on the heels of Brookwood.

Our updated Georgia high school girls basketball rankings see little change from last week, with a few exceptions. 

Brookwood remains in the top spot, followed by Hebron Christian, River Ridge, and Lake O Academy. Kell falls a couple of spots after an 8-point loss to Palm Bay High School. 

Class 3A’s Lumpkin County moves up into the top five, climbing two spots from their No. 7 ranking last week. Buford and St. Francis simply flip spots after the Lady Wolves’ victory over the Lady Knights last week. Central (Macon) moves up a spot after their win over cross-town rival Northeast. 

The Clinch County girls make their debut in our top 25, entering at No. 17 after an impressive 20-point win over Coffee. The Lady Panthers’ victory bumps previously ranked White County from the poll this week. 

But, as we have discovered, things can change quickly in high school basketball, so look for your team hopefully making a run and entering our next top 25.

Our updated Georgia high school girls basketball rankings of the new year rewards five new entries for their solid play since the release of our previous poll, as well as teams that were ranked that moved up several spots. 

Among the new teams in our poll are the undefeated Lady Warriors of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, who are in the midst of one of the most incredible turnarounds in girls basketball. They’ve gone from a winless 0-19 season two years ago to a 26-win season last year and are now 13-0 headed into the 2023 part of their season. 

Remaining at the top of the poll are the Brookwood Lady Broncos, who have suffered just one loss with a 13-1 overall record. The Griffin Lady Bears make the biggest leap from our previous poll, climbing 10 spots from their former No. 15 ranking.

The Georgia high school girls basketball regular season is officially underway as we debut our first ITG Next regular season Top 25 rankings. However, things really get going with the Thanksgiving Holiday tournaments, which will feature many of the teams listed here. 

With a handful of games already played, there is some movement in our poll starting at the top, as preseason-ranked  No. 1 Lovejoy drops to No. 10 after a 1-0 start. Lumpkin County, the defending state champion in 3A, hangs on at the No. 2 spot. Hebron Christian, out of Class 3A, leaps up the poll 8 places to take over the No. 3 spot.

Preseason Rankings

Reclassification in the GHSA turned some old classifications upside down on the football side of things this season, and Georgia high school girls basketball is impacted too heading into the 2022-23 season. 

The favorites in this year’s Class 2A will be any one of the teams who were in the former Class 1A-Private, which, of course, no longer exists. Two of those teams are Landmark Christian and Mt. Paran. One team that was in the former Class 1A-Private and is now a member of Class 1A-DI is Galloway, who will certainly be one of the favorites to take it all. 

The Norcross girls, who along with their male counterparts are defending state champions, are a strong favorite to repeat in Class 7A again. Look out for Class 6A: They have five or six teams that could easily challenge for the state title this year.
