Andrew Jackson
Tigers Looking to Develop Under New HC
First year head coach Richard Barnes takes over a program that went 2-8 last year and is returning 10 total starters. Highlights from last year include a shutout of Terry Parker at home and a close win over Baldwin 13-7.
Jackson will rely on the experience of senior quarterback Raekwon Wall who has started the past two seasons for the Tigers. While their backfield is young, senior lineman Zuriel Davis will aid in creating opportunities for the backs to find the hole in the multiple wing T offense.
On defense, Jackson boasts a very talented secondary in Avery Green and Jerraud Webster. Couple that with underclassman defensive backs Myles and Matt Wilson, the Tigers are well equipped to handle the passing attacks of Sandalwood, Ribault and First Coast. Their success will rely heavily on their ability to stop the run.
Coach Barnes stated, “The team is a young and hungry team that is looking to rebound from a 2-8 2014 season.” The Tigers have three playoff teams from last year on their 2015 schedule, but the good news is that all three have new quarterbacks.

Atlantic Coast
Coach Elliot Taking Over One of the Steadiest Programs in Area
In early 2015, legendary coach Kevin Sullivan retired after 33 years of coaching with the past 5 being the head coach of Atlantic Coast football program. Over those 5 years, the Stingrays went 32-18 and have built a winning tradition at a school that has only been around just as long. Long-time assistant coach Matt Elliot is taking over a program that finished 7-3 in 2014.
The production on offense by last year’s seniors will be missed. In 2014, TE Chris Cunningham and wideout David Gardner accounted for 62% of the total passing offense and also caught 6 of the 8 touchdown passes. Despite losing their top two rushers to graduation, sophomore Terrell Wright is primed to carry the ground game in 2015 behind lead blocker Matt Ahearn who earned all-state honors in 2014. Last year, Wright reached the end zone four times and tallied 553 yards as the third string back in a run heavy offense.
Defensively, Noble Tribune and Jaylon Mcclain-Sapp return to a secondary where combined, garnered 5 of the team’s 8 interceptions.
The Stingray’s roster also includes the areas top-kicking prospect, Trey Simons who averaged 90% kicks made and a long of 45.

Baker County
Baker County Ready in the Trenches
The Wildcats went 4-6 last year during coach Tom MacPherson’s first season with the team. It was a very competitive district in which they faced 4 state playoff teams and also lost their blue-chip DE CeCe Jefferson very early in the season. These were all tough tasks for the new coach bringing in a new staff and system, but the future looks bright as they are returning an experienced defensive line in Shaquan Griffin, Dalton Thomas, Tay Reed and Brian West. Their success in 2015 will rely heavily on the ability to stop the run as they have moved to a new district that contains area-rushing leaders Clay High. MacPherson says that 2014 has taught his young team a lot about dealing with set backs and that he challenges his players to compete through adversity everyday.
In year 2, coach MacPherson is ready to get back on the field in front of a very loyal Glen St. Mary fan base. “This community and environment is outstanding,” said MacPherson. “It has an old school small town football feel to it and that is very important to a program.” MacPherson asserted that there will be a little more consistency this year in regards to players feeling more confident in the system.
Mondrell Jefferson will lead the secondary, as he is a proven defensive back that led the team in interceptions a year ago. Beyond Jefferson, the Wildcats are looking for others to fill in the roles of those lost to graduation. Coach MacPherson stated that his team his young, but his tough love approach will create opportunities for motivated players to find a starting role.
On offense, 300 lb lineman Travion Clayton and Austin Rhoden bring back valuable experience and will pave the way for running back Jarvis DeSue who averaged 7 YPC in 2014.

Bartram Trail
Bear’s Strength Key Factor in Reclaiming District
In 2014, Bartram Trail gave up less than 10 points in 7 of their 10 games. The stingy defense help guide the Bears to a 7-4 record, but a late season loss to rivals Creekside High kept the Bears from the post season for the first time in 6 years.
Although the defense returns only 3 starters from 2014, coach Sutherland is confident that his squad will continue their strength first mantra. “This group has set numerous records in the weight room this winter and spring,” Sutherland said “They run to the ball very well. They are a physical group that should create numerous turnovers.”
The Bears 3-3-5 defense, led by veterans Michael Clark, Jordan Helm and Tanner Murphy, will place a lot of importance on their secondary to fill multiple roles within the scheme. Graduated linebacker Hayden Good produced a team leading 63 solo tackles in 2014 and it is yet to be determined who will fill that role in 2015. Prospective linebackers include Gavin Powell, John Wilson and Nicos Rivera.
Offensively, the Bears return 10 starters to the spread triple option led by sophomore quarterback Joey Gatewood. Gatewood is the area’s most sought after recruit in the class of 2018 and is entering an offense that amassed over 2,100 yards on the ground last year. Perhaps one of the most under rated running backs in St. Johns County is senior running back David Coleman who has racked up 2,477 yards and 23 TDs over the past 2 years. Up front, lineman Jake McKay, Brady Keller and Jared Nourse will bring invaluable starting experience.
Bryce Walker and Dallas Geiger will lead into 2015 as the top passing targets, but are very deep with skilled receivers ready to make an impact as the Bears look to amp up scoring.
Coach Sutherland has always been known for more than just a football coach and his efforts for instilling exemplary conduct within his program continues to resonate with incoming classes. “This is a wonderful group of young men,” stated Sutherland, “ They are fantastic football players and even better young men. They embrace their roles as campus leaders, and represent our program well – on and off the field.”

Crusaders Look to Youth for Strength
The Crusaders had a rather successful year, finishing with a 10-2 record and making it to the Regional Finals in the FHSAA Class 5A State Playoffs. A 35-14 defeat at the hands of Godby High School (Tallahassee, Fla.) ended their title chase, but Bishop Kenny head coach Mark Thorson has high hopes for his team moving forward.
“We demand accountability, hard work, commitment, and teamwork,” he said. “We have high expectations for our kids in everything that they do, both on and off the field. We have to take advantage of every opportunity on the practice field to get better.”
The Crusaders open the 2015 season on the road, and while many of their weapons were lost to graduation, Coach Thorson believes that the youth of his roster is full of potential.
“We are going to need a bunch of kids to grow up fast and adjust to the speed of the game at the varsity level,” he said. “I think that our young kids are hungry to prove that they belong and are excited about the season. We had a productive spring and will hopefully get better each week as the season progresses.”

Cards Looking to Reset Under New HC
Two years removed from a the program’s first 10 win season, the Cardinals will look to bounce back from their 4-5 2014 season as new head coach Travis Markoski takes over the program from Brian McCrae. Season highlights from last year include a 37-7 win on the road at Christ’s Church Academy and a regular season finale win against St. Joseph 10-3. The highest rated opponent on 2015 Snyder schedule is Hilliard, who went 3-1 in districts and advanced to the first round of the playoffs.

Bolles
Bulldogs Look to Reload in 2015
The Bulldogs have enjoyed over a decade of continuous 10 plus win seasons and 2015 looks to be no different. Bolles has faced Booker T. Washington from Miami in the 4A FHSAA championship game for the past 4 years, dropping the latest contest 54-35.
Mac Jones will take over at quarterback, who saw playing time last year while senior quarterback Joe Edden rehabbed from injury. Jones will be without 2014 team rushing leaders Dexter Carter Jr. and Christian Bermudez, as well as captain lineman Jeremiah Theus, but junior running back E.J Porter is ready to carry the load in 2015.
Defensively, linebacker Kyle Johnson and secondary standout Ahman Ross return to a defense that registered 4 shutouts and only allowed 99 points in the 2014 regular season.
In true Bolles fashion, it can be expected that they will reload with underclassmen that fit their system on both sides of the ball. Head coach Corky Rogers is nearing 450 career wins and has established a proven model for training players to flourish in his system. Through strict discipline and unparalleled commitment to the weight room, the Bulldog’s Wing-T offense is the most efficient system in the state if not the country.
At 70 years old, coach Rogers ranks 6th in the nation for all time wins and says his decision to continue coaching is year to year. We are all thankful in Northeast Florida that we will get to witness at least one more year of high school football history.
Bolles will open up the season at home against Lake Mary on August 28th, but their last regular season game against Raines has the makings to be one of the area’s most elite matchups.

Eagles Learning New System Under Coach Stomps
A winless 2014 season and only 3 seniors on the roster would normally seem like a program is heading in the wrong direction, but new head coach Jim Stomps has already began changing the course before his team has even taken a competitive snap. With 20 years of coaching experience, including 11 as head coach in high schools throughout Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Oregon, coach Stomps likes what he sees from his team thus far. During summer 7 on 7 workouts, the Eagle’s have competed with schools ranging from 5A and 8A and even walked away with 3 wins at the “Throw Down in O-Town” tournament.
The Eagles will be playing in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference, which will allow the program to form new rivals and set bench marks by competing with Orlando Christian Prep and Faith Christian who were the two best teams in the conference last year. Of note, the Eagles will be traveling to Orlando 3 weeks in a row, something that no other team in Northeast Florida has to overcome. Playing on the road is difficult, but for most schools that means a short bus trip over to a cross-town rival.
Coach Stomps will bring an up-tempo style offense that includes spreading out the opponent while operating within the no huddle.
Senior captain Cole Berger will lead the offense from the backfield as well as the defense from the middle. In 2014, Berger was the leading rusher, near the top in tackles and led in punting average. Look for this ironman senior to continue his production in 2015.

Blue Devils Running Attack Key for 2015
The Blue Devils are coming off back to back 10 win seasons under 5th year head coach Josh Hoekstra. The 2013 team started off 3-5 before rattling off seven consecutive wins to the state title game where they eventually fell to American Heritage. Last year however, the Blue Devils stormed the whole season going 9-1 but were not able to make it out of regionals. A district championship would have been a tremendous success for the majority of teams in the area, but despite the dominant regular season performance, the Blue Devils were wanting more.
“We learned that we need to start fast and finish strong,” says Hoekstra, “We didn’t play very hard or to our ability in the playoff loss to Bishop Kenny.”
Many would say that Clay should have a state championship or bust approach to 2015, but coach Hoekstra insists that the only goal they should be concerned with is competing for a district championship. If you take care of your district, then you will always have the opportunity to make a run at the title.
Jake Smith will take over quarterback duties in 2015, replacing the graduated dual-threat J.T Turner. The QB transition will likely be seamless because of the running back tandem of Colin Wilson and Bilal Ally. Wilson finished as the top rusher in Clay County with over 1,500 yards and 27 TDs. In front of their running backs leading the way will be Jacob Conrad and Jarrod Leeds. Wide-out Tony Stephenson averaged 15.5 YPC in 2014 and with the exodus of leading receiver Chris Barron, his opportunity to contribute should increase greatly in the run heavy offense.
Only 2 returning players, Tyler Allen and Mike Adams, were permanent fixtures on the defense in 2014. Combined, they registered 120 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Hoekstra sees his line-backing core as the strongest unit on defense and is looking for newcomers to fill roles on the line along side of Allen.

Creekside Knights: New Staff, Same Desire to Succeed
Practice makes perfect. It is the mantra of the 2015 Creekside Knights, and leading the way is new head coach Jeff Schaum.
“We just want to play the best we can and improve every day,” he said. “If our team plays unselfishly, intelligently, and with teamwork, we will compete.”
Last year’s team went 3-8, but the past is just that when it comes to this year’s Knights. The football program has seen a complete overhaul; the only coach remaining in position from 2014 is JV head coach Ron Isaaco.
“We just want to do what our players can do,” Coach Schaum said. “We just want them to have fun. We believe in a total team concept, and we care for one another. With those things in place, I expect the Knights to have a great, enjoyable, and successful season.”

Crescent City
Crescent City head coach Al Smith is entering his fourth season with the Raiders. He is accustomed to the ways of the team, and he has shaped them into a formidable group. However; the team is likely to be tested, specifically in areas of depth and experience.
“We had a lot of veteran players last year,” Coach Smith said. “This season, we have to make some rookies veterans quickly.”
The Raiders finished the 2014 campaign with a 7-3 overall record, but fell in the first round of the FHSAA Class A State Playoffs to Union County (Lake Butler, Fla.).
“We are young this year,” Coach Smith said. “The guys have two months this summer to mature. It’s all about mentorship, communication, and networking. Offensively, we want to eat the clock and score on every drive. On the defensive side, we have to get to the ball and create turnovers.”
The team may be young, but Coach Smith believes that this group of talent has the ability to be great.
“I just remind them of the ones who played before them,” he said. “Pride never dies.”

Duval Charter
Panthers Look to Build on Success of 2014
“2014 was a breakthrough season for us,” said Duval Charter head coach Bernard Harrell. “Making the playoffs for the first time after coming so close in 2013; the kids finally got over that hump. Having a chance to taste the playoffs for the first time with so many kids coming back from last year’s team gives us the motivation to get back there and make some noise.”
The Panthers had an impressive outing last season, finishing with a record of 8-2 (4-1 in District 2) and clinching a playoff berth. Although their title hopes were dashed with a 30-6 loss to North Florida Christian (Tallahassee, Fla.), their morale remains high and hopeful for this year.
“This year’s team, we expect big things,” Coach Harrell said. “We got a great core of student-athletes returning from 2014. Although we’re making the jump up to a higher classification, we feel with the schedule we played last year, and the schedule put together this year, our kids will be battle tested and ready to compete for a playoff spot. This year we’re not happy just making the playoffs, our kids are motivated to make a run at a championship.”
The team is returning 13 starters; seven on the offensive side of the ball and six on defense. Coach Harrell believes that their core of returning starters will be a tremendous asset in a run to a title.
“These kids have played a lot of football the last three years together; most of them have been playing Varsity since ninth grade,” he said. “They’ve seen a lot and been through a lot as a collective group. I tell our players to just focus on doing their job at the highest level, every single play, and the wins will follow. If I can get all of our kids and coaches to buy into this philosophy, we’ll have a winning season.”

Eagle’s View
For the Warriors, Playoffs are the Focus
“We finished 6-4, but we left a couple of wins on the field,” said Eagle’s View Academy head coach Frank Andrea. Though the Warriors had a solid outing in 2014, there was one key element left to be desired: making the FHSAA State Playoffs. Coach Andrea is confident that this year’s Warriors can accomplish that goal.
“We have a great community fan support behind us,” he said. “The administration here is committed to a winning program.”
“We were primarily an air-raid team. Now, we are looking to be more balanced.” That balance should not be hard to obtain; the Warriors will have tremendous help in their backfield in Tanner Korn. Last year, Korn led the team in rushing, finishing just over 700 total yards on the year.
“We are returning a great running attack, led by Tanner Korn,” Coach Andrea said. “He is being helped by an offensive line that averages out at around 240 pounds.”
The team is returning eight starters; however, the defense has been depleted. Only two of the eight returning starters are on the defensive side of the ball.
“We want to make the playoffs, and we want to win our district.” Coach Andrea said. “We’ll just have to make sure to get the ball into our playmakers’ hands.”

Experienced O-Line Poised to Lead 15’ Commanders
Amidst an unforeseen mid-offseason coaching change and numerous player transfers, you would think the Commanders were coming off of a dismal 2014 campaign, however this could not be any further from reality. The Commanders went undefeated (6-0) in their district and would make it to the 6A state regional finals before falling to Choctawatchee. Coach Terry Gilliam will take over the program in 2015, but he is not an unfamiliar face. He was the head coach of the Commanders from 2004-2012 before being replaced by Paul Pierson for the 13’ and 14’ seasons.
The Commanders lost their all-purpose backs Taylor Thomas and Javaris Davis to graduation, but it looks like it will not slow down the ground game due to much of the production came from a monstrous O-line. Thomas and Davis were exceptional backs who signed with Oregon State and Auburn respectively, but the push from Jordan Jackson and Curtis Dunlap, whom currently hold offers from various DI colleges, was a tremendous factor in their success.
The defense will be anchored by 2014 leading tackler Avery Wilds and linebacker Brian Furguson.
“We prepare our players by telling them to do ordinary things better than anyone else,” says Gilliam. This simplified approach serves as a constant reminder that perfection is impossible, but it will teach his players that as long as they are doing better than the man across from them, they are winning.
The 2015 Commander’s roster is fitting for the phrase “Those who stay, will be champions” made famous by legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler who took over a program that saw his players numbers decrease from 140 to 75 when he was hired. Every player that stayed for 4 years under Schembechler, walked away with a Big Ten Championship ring.

Rams: “Rebuilding” is a Thing of the Past
“We had three close losses in 2013, and three close losses in 2014,” Coach Miller said. “Those types of losses are hard memories in a rebuilding process.”
The Rams are looking to the future while continuing to build on the past. Last season, they finished with a record of 4-6, and according to head coach Marcus Miller, the time for excuses has come and gone.
The Rams are anchored by a core of determined role players. They will have 14 familiar faces in the starting ranks, including six on offense and eight on defense. The team is looking to vast improvement in the future, and the past few seasons will serve as a strong motivational factor.
“It’s year four of a rebuilding process,” Coach Miller said. “Rebuilding can no longer be an excuse.”

Episcopal
Eagle’s Strong Line Vital to Offensive Progress
Episcopal started the season 5-0 last year before dropping their only 2 district games, which cut a rather successful season short. With the emergence of speedster running back Daniel Fisher accounting for 27 TDs, the 2014 Eagles secured a +12.2 point differential in 2014. The Eagles are searching for a replacement of Fisher’s hefty production, but offensive lineman Andrew Boselli and Conor Chepenik should create plenty of opportunities for the new backfield. Boselli is a hard commit to FSU and brings a lot of value to the development of the offense guided by junior quarterback Joseph Brunnell. Brunell is entering year two as a starter for the Eagles and will look to A.J Wooten as a weapon out of the backfield.
With only four returning starter on defense, the Eagles will turn to Darius Newbill and Grayson Vickers to take the lead in 2015. In 2014, the Eagles limited opposing offenses to just 20 points per game. Anytime a team can limit their opponent to less than three touchdowns, it gives them a chance to a win.
Team expectations are high as they enter year three of head coach Mark Brunell’s system. A great opportunity for the team this year is when they travel to West Florida to play Holmes County and to Georgia to take on Savannah Country Day.

Pirates Looking for Stability Amidst Coaching Changes
At the end of a one win 2014 season, Travis Hodge resigned as head coach of the Pirates. Administration hired Casey Thiele, formerly the head coach of West Nassau from 2012-13, to lead the Pirates this year. In June, for un-announced reasons, Thiele resigned just 2 months before the start of the 2015 season. Defensive coordinator Josh Charles has been named as the interim head coach for the 2015 season.
Fernandina will be competing in a new district along side of cross county rivals West Nassau against the likes of Jackson, Bolles and Raines. The Pirates will open the season up on the road against Keystone Heights who went 2-8-1 in 2014.

First Coast
Bucs Find New Meaning in 15’
The Buccaneers have enjoyed 10 plus win seasons since 2010, including an undefeated regular season at the 8A level in 2014. First Coast will drop back down to 7A in 2015 and will compete for a district title against Atlantic Coast, Lee, Fletcher and Columbia (Lake City). The Bucs met little competition in 2014 as told by their +21 point differential and 12 consecutives wins before losing in to Apopka in the regional finals.
With the loss of Mr. Football, DeAndre Johnson to graduation, the Bucs will face a formidable challenge trying to find a replacement for the 4-year starter. Johnson threw for an unparalleled 3,783 yards and 47 touchdowns and was a dynamic piece to the team’s success last year. Senior QB Javaro Hardy looks to be the front-runner for taking the snaps in 2015.
A starting running back has yet to be named, but the young backfield does know that they will be running behind two FIU linemen commits in Dallas and Douglas Connell. The offense will also be returning with standout receiver Kevin Stepherson who is verbally committed to Notre Dame. Stepherson accumulated 756 yards, 11 TDs and led the team with a 22.9 yards per catch average.
The strongest unit on defense will be First Coast’s secondary with Khalil Bryant and Jaylon McClain-Sapp starting.
The Bucs open up the season at home against Arlington Country Day, but the following weeks will prove to be a challenge as they travel to Gainesville and Central (Miami) in consecutive weeks.
The 2015 Buccaneers will be playing for more than just champioship aspirations in 2015. They will be playing in remembrance of teammate Johnnel Johnson and classmate Jaquan Reeves whose lives were lost prematurely last school year.

Golden Eagles Look to Fly High in 2015
The Fleming Island Golden Eagles finished 5-5 in the 2014 season, but only secured one win in four district contests (a 27-13 road victory against Fletcher High School). For the 2015 season, the team is using the less-than-impressive outing from a year prior as motivation.
“We are focusing on eliminating turnovers and protecting the football,” said Fleming Island head football coach Frank Hall.
The team is returning a solid core of players; there will be nine starters present from last year’s team (four on defense, five on offense).
“Our running backs, our kicking game, and our defensive line should be strong,” Coach Hall said. “I believe we can compete for a district title.”

Fletcher
Fletcher Enters First Season Under Medlock
After the 2014 season, head coach Josh Corey departed the Fletcher program for the NFL, creating the opportunity for longtime assistant coach Ricky Medlock to take over a program that has not had a losing season since 2006. Since 2010, the Senators have gone 41-10 and have seen numerous players to go on and play at the next level. There will be some slight adjustments made in 2015, but being that coach Medlock is a familiar face around the program, the transition period will be minimal.
With a competitive district in 2014, Fletcher was able to qualify for post-season play despite their 2-2 record. The Senators would go on to defeat Oak Ridge in the first round of the 7A playoffs but eventually lost to the undefeated Oakleaf Knights in the regional semifinals.
The biggest weapon on offense this year will be TE Chris Ellington who was unfortunately sidelined by injury last year, but currently holds multiple offers at the DI level. Last years leading receiver Kalif Jackson is now a freshman at the University of Florida, but senior Chrisjohn Roscoe is ready to take over the role in 2015. The offensive line includes college prospects Randy Lopez, William Bivens, and SaDarren Moody.
Jacquez Williams will lead the secondary that is the team’s deepest unit with Devin Watters, Zach Thorton and Chase Harrison all bringing starting experience.

Hilliard Enters 2015 with a New Head Coach
Zack Whittenburg is entering his first season as head coach of the Hilliard Flashes after a stint as an assistant at Charlton County High School (Folkston, Ga.). Going into his first year in charge, he has only one requirement of his athletes: work hard.
“If you’re a member of this team, then you’re showing up to work each day trying to be better than yesterday,” Coach Whittenburg said. “I want tremendous attitude and effort. If we do things right, then we have the best shot at success.”
Last year’s Flashes went 5-6 (3-1 in District 6), which earned them a playoff spot. Unfortunately, they fell in a 34-21 loss in the first round to Hamilton County High School (Jasper, Fla.).
“We have to work on limiting mistakes,” Coach Whittenburg said. “We want to be physical up front and control the line of scrimmage. We have to focus on small details and not accept anything less than the team’s best effort.”

Mandarin
Mustangs Carry Success into 2015 Season
The Mustangs of Mandarin High School look to build on recent success; last year the team finished their first winning season since 2008. Along the way, they picked up impressive wins over Sandalwood (for the first time in six years) and perennial playoff contender Fort Pierce Central.
“We accomplished some things that we had not been done at Mandarin in several years,” said Mustangs head coach Brian Braddock. “Our expectations are now higher, and we still have a lot of work to do to realize the potential that this program has.”
The team returns a total of 11 starters (six on offense, five on defense); leading the way offensively will be quarterback Tyler Greenlee and running back Aundre Kearney. Kearney will also see time on defense, where he will be joined by defensive back Anthony Brown (who led the team in interceptions in 2014). The returning starters will lead the charge, but Coach Braddock believes that the rest of the team will follow suit.
“The offseason in the weight room was tremendous for our team,” he said. “We plan to be a stronger, more disciplined version of ourselves than we have ever produced before.”
The Mustangs open the season on the road against the Bears of Bartram Trail High School (St. Johns, Fla.) on Aug. 21. But, in the eyes of the team, each game is just as important as the next.
“The challenge is not worrying about the opponent, but focusing on yourself and what you need to do to improve every day. If we do that, Fridays will take care of themselves.”

Menendez
The Menendez Falcons went 5-5 in the 2014 season (2-2 in District 5), but the returning players and coach staff are confident that the team can improve.
“We took our lumps due to youth and depth,” said Falcons head coach Patrick Turner. “We should be better this year due to our returning players. We have to do a better job of limiting the mistakes we make and taking advantage of field position.”
The Falcons are primed to make an impact this year, returning a total of 19 starters between the offense and defense.
“Offensively, we want to be a fundamental scoring machine,” Coach Turner said. “Defensively, we want to be sound and fly to the football. But our main goal is to compete each game – regardless of the outcome.”
The team has been preparing since the spring, and their efforts were capped off with a win over Providence High School in their Spring game.
“We just want to keep them on the steady incline of getting better,” Coach Turner said. “We would like to win at least six games this fall, finish in the top two, and win a playoff game.”

The Broncos 2014 season ended with a 3-7 record and averaged only 19 points per game, but the offense was young. Quarterback Daniel Justino enters year 2 as the starter and will have TE Andrew Austin who previously led the team in receiving. Justino also serves as the team’s kicker where he completed 11/14 field goals and earned an all area selection for his efforts.
Defensively, linebacker David Ayres will anchor the defense with secondary assistance from Alec Dowling and Jermaine Harkins.

Nease
Nease Striving for First Winning Season in Six Years
As Nease High School attempts to bring itself back to the glory years of the mid-2000s, Tim Krause in his second year as head coach is finding himself with only four returning starters on defense and seven on offense.
Krause, formerly the offensive coordinator at Bishop Kenny, was 4-6 last season, and 1-3 in the region. It’s tough being in the same region as well-established teams like Creekside, Bartram and St. Augustine, and in the last few years Nease has struggled to gain any dominance against these teams.
The Panthers’ offense, led by quarterback Leighton Alley, returns seven starters, four of which are wide receivers. Alley’s main target, Jephte Cesar, graduated last year, but Cam Adams, Michael Cotter, Marquise Davis and Reidar Hubbard are ready to compete for the receiving leader spot. Also returning is center Zach Moss and linebacker Kendric Harris, who also plays running back and was the leading touchdown scorer last year, with 13. Alley, a 6’4”, 215 pound rising junior, hopes to best his records from last year, when he was 87/174 for 1,118 yards.
On defense, Nease returns its leading tackler, senior Jordan Willis, who is a college prospect and last year recorded 107 tackles. Also returning are DBs Aris Duffey and Max Ragin, and linemen Adam Timmens.
Nease High School has had three head coaches in the past five years, none of whom finished with winning seasons. The state of the program has been on a decline since a loss in the FHSAA Championship in 2006, however head coach Tim Krause thinks this next year in Panther Stadium will be a better one.
“I’m incredibly excited…it’s a place you don’t have to sacrifice anything. You’ve got all the things you need to be successful and enjoy working right there”, he said. As a Nease alumni myself, and on behalf of Panther fans everywhere, I hope he’s right about that.

Oakleaf
Oakleaf Built for States
When head coach Derek Chipoletti took over the Oakleaf program in 2012, the Knights had only won 3 out of their first 20 games since the schools inception in 2010. Fast-forward to 2015 and the Knights are one of the highest ranked teams in Northeast Florida due to their undefeated 2014 regular season and deep playoff run. Furthermore, 14 starters are back in 2015 primed to make a run at states.
“The standard has been set at Oakleaf,” Chipoletti said. “We will win games and put ourselves in a position to be successful based on the way we become men off of the field. The winning will take care of itself if we are concerned about becoming outstanding young men.”
As one of the most productive offenses in 2014, the Knights have deep roster of proven playmakers and promising underclassmen. “We lost 4 starters on the OL, but having such a solid core of offensive skill players returning will help us,” stated Chipoletti. The only returning starter on the line is nationally ranked JeVionte Nash who is currently committed to Wake Forest. Third year starter at quarterback Jordan Johnson earned all area accolades in 2014 and passed for just shy of 2,000 yards during his sophomore season. Much of Johnson’s success can be attributed to offensive weapons Keylan Brown, Desmon George, and Cari Coleman who will all be back on the field in 2015. It can be expected again that the Knights will be one of the top spread offenses in the area.
Just like the offense, the Knight defense, led by long-time Miami linebacker commit Shaquille Quarterman, returns most of their starters. Quarterman has flourished in the 4-3 defense by recording 137 solo tackles a year ago. DeAndre Steelman will start at linebacker in 2015, but is one of the most versatile players on the roster with starting experience at every defensive position in his 3 years at Oakleaf. Also returning is DT Clay Brooks who registered 5 sacks and 12 TFL’s.
“We will have a solid front 7 and must replace Chris Westry and Carlos McCracken, but I believe our young men out there will rise to the occasion,” says Chipoletti. The secondary has lost some depth, but returning players Nick Roberts, Kalif Copeland and Tyrell Brown will bring a lot of production back in 2015. Roberts topped Northeast Florida with 7 interceptions in 2014 while Copeland and Brown combined for another 4.

Orange Park
For the Orange Park Raiders, the goal is simple: Compete.
“We were very young (last season),” said Raiders head coach Craig Nosse. “We played a difficult schedule, but the experience we gained as a team was what has, and will, shape the 2015 Orange Park Raiders.”
Coach Nosse’s plan is straightforward: the motivation of the team will come through success. And while the team’s record may have been less than desired, it did nothing to damper the determination and drive of this year’s locker room.
“Our goal is to be competitive and have a chance to win every game we play,” Coach Nosse said. “We want to compete for a county championship, a district title, and we want to advance in the playoffs. I believe that the more efficient and focused you are in practice, the better it will translate to performance on the field come game time.”
The Raiders open their season at home; the support of the fans and the community will play a tremendous role in the overall morale of this year’s group.
“You can’t put a price on it,” Coach Nosse said. “We want to make the community proud of the product that we put on the field every week.”

Eagles Looking For Starters in Young Roster
Most of the production for the Eagles on both sides of the ball in 2014 came from their senior class led by all-purpose athlete Tyson Wright. In 2015, Paxon will have to look to their underclassman to fill starting roles.

High Offensive Production Expected for 2015 Sharks
The Sharks 2014 season may not have gone as planned, but one question was definitely answered. They now know who their quarterback will be for the next two seasons. Nick Tronti was just a sophomore last year so he was not the penciled in starter to begin the season. Tronti became the starter in week 2 and eventually accumulated a county leading 1,788 yards over 9 games.
The Sharks have graduated their top four receivers from 2014, so the receiving corp will see all new faces in 2015. A strong spring game by track star Ke’Von Ahmad might have earned him a starting role this fall. All-purpose player Quint Boyd looks to be the Sharks best offensive weapon that accounted for 8 TDs in 2014. The Sharks ground game is still shaping but the emergence of lineman Zach Lowery and Carter Lewis should create plenty of running opportunity.
Week one, the Sharks will face off against county rival Nease at home. There are only three 2014 playoff teams on the Sharks 2015 schedule which should allow them to pick up a few more wins and compete for a district title.

Stallions Elite Ground Game Back for 15’
2014 was the first year for the Stallions under head coach Jeff Kopp. Playing in the smallest district in Northeast Florida, Providence secured a trip to the FHSAA playoffs by beating cross-town rival Episcopal 34-7. Although they would go on to lose in the first round to Trinity Catholic (Ocala), there is much to be excited about the returning Stallions who have 40 letterman on the 2015 roster.
Leading the charge on offense will be Duke lineman commit Jaylen Miller and Florida rushing leader Jamauri Wakefield. Wakefield is committed to Wake Forest and amassed over 2,500 yards and 37 TDs for the Stallions. Beyond an elite running game to rely on, quarterback Jack Adams will also have 6’5” TE Will Mallory as a huge target. The offense should remain relatively the same as they are returning 8 starters, but coach Kopp has introduced a new scheme for 2015 that may change stats but are hoping that it translates to more wins.
Defensively, the Stallions will look for leadership from linebackers JJ Jefferson and Cody Kobb as they are introduced to a new defensive coordinator and scheme.
Providence will play its toughest schedule in school history, but playing six 2014 playoff teams will give them a good benchmark on how they stack up against Northeast Florida’s best programs. Those teams include University Christian, Fletcher, Creekside, North Florida Christian, Trinity Christian, and Oakleaf.

Vikings Roster Loaded Experience in 15’
There is a lot of buzz around the Viking program right now because of a senior class that boasts upwards of 10 college prospects.
Augie DeBiase will take over quarterback duties from the graduated Micah Zanders. At his disposal will be two Florida Gator commits Ronald Patterson and Rick Wells who combined for over 1,500 yards in 2014. The Vikings will look to limit the passing turnovers this year and a big factor in that will be getting the ground game going with running back Alex Rutledge who netted 1,163 yards on 167 carries. Look for 330 lb tackle Solomon Kindley to dominate the line of scrimmage in his senior year.
The pass rushing ability of JaQuan and Joshua Bailey will define the Vikings defense this year. Miami commit and 2014 tackle leader Michael Pinckney is expected to fill the role of captain on defense, while the secondary returns cover specialist Bishop Bonnett.
In 2014, Raines weathered one of the toughest schedules in the area that included an undefeated team in First Coast High, a state championship runner up in Bolles, and two regional finals teams. The schedule does not get any easier for the Vikings in 15’, but as one of the area’s most experienced teams, a state title is in their sights.

Ribault
Ribault Ready After Productive Summer
The 2014 Trojans narrowly missed the playoffs as it came down to a 3-way tie with Ribault, Westside, and Bishop Kenny. An extra game was added to determine the winner via a 1-quarter shootout and just could not get it going against the Wolverines in only 12 minutes of play. This has only fueled the fire for the Trojans as they have relentlessly attacked the off-season with a purpose. The skilled players took to the road and competed in elite camps including Jimbo Fisher’s FSU 7 on 7 and the Adidas State Championship where they went undefeated.
Returning quarterback Darias McGoogin who threw for 1,322 yards and 22TD’s in 2014, will have many weapons at his disposal including ironman player De’Sean McNair and Brandon Thomas who are entering their senior years.
One thing that coach Flynn continues to stress to his team is that being a football player at Ribault is more than just that. “We represent our fans, community and we want them to be proud of the way we play and carry ourselves on and off the field,” said Flynn. “We invite former Ribault NFL players and college players to speak and encourage our team members. We worship together and help them prepare for the ACT, in addition to providing study hall.”
Coach Flynn has very high expectations of his defense that returns 8 starters. Flynn stated, “I believe that this will be one of the best defense in the area lead by defensive coordinator Kevin Smith (FSU graduate) and his defensive staff.” MLB Leon Huey has solidified his position as captain of the defense by leading the team in tackles last year with 88. Coupled with defensive lineman Gentorris Jackson, the Trojans look to have one of the best run stopping defenses in the district.

Ridgeview Panthers: One Week at a Time
Last season, the Ridgeview Panthers finished 5-5 (1-3 in District 2). While others may choose to look at the down side of the stat sheet, head coach Charlie Libretto motivates his players with the upside.
“Even though we only finished 5-5, we were only predicted to win one game,” Coach Libretto said. “We just had too many close games where we didn’t finish. Our goal this season is to finish every game.”
The team is returning 10 starters (seven on offense, three on defense). Although there will be many new faces on the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers will be anchored by standout linebackers Jennings Jackson and James Libretto.
“Offensively, we graduated our starting quarterback and running back,” Coach Libretto said. “But I believe we will succeed; it has to be done one week at a time. I believe we can compete for a district title.”

Generals Return All Statistical Leaders in 15’
The 2015 Lee High Generals roster will look very similar to 2014 except they will be returning to the field much more experienced than a year ago. The Generals went 7-3 but a 3-3 district record was not enough to qualify for the post-season. The Generals will be moving up one classification to 7A in 2015 and have to compete against First Coast, Fletcher, Atlantic Coast and Columbia for a chance at a district title.
Running back Tony Belle will be the starter in the backfield who toted the ball 100 times for 506 yards in 2014. Belle also led the team in receiving yards.
MLB Keirston Johnson and OLB Kalen Williams combined for 140 tackles and 4 sacks. Their production will be key for the defense in 2015.
A few of the Generals signature wins last year include defensive shutout against Baldwin, Westside, and Jackson. All year, the defense only gave up 179 points and outscored their opponents 150-42 in their 7 wins.

Sandalwood
Passing Game Set to Soar for Saints
After putting up 42 points and winning by 4 touchdowns in each of their first two games of 2014, the Saints were primed for a great run. They would go on to lose their next two games to Fletcher and Flagler Palm Coast and were never really able to find an answer on defense for the remainder of the season.
One thing that did not have to be addressed this past off-season was the passing game. Illinois commit Eli Peters and Indiana commit Phil Benker materialized as the top passing game duo in Northeast Florida. Benker would go on to lead the city with 1,062 yards and 10 TDs.
The defense remains to be seen, but the loss of Wake Forest commit Kahlil Welsh will definitely need to be addressed. Welsh recorded 12 sacks and 9 tackles for loss in 2014.
Only one season removed from their last playoff berth, the Saints have plenty of veteran experience that knows how to win. Sandalwood has only experienced one losing season in the past decade. The Saints will face four 2014 playoff teams this year.

Jackets Continue As Top St Johns Program
St Augustine’s last state title was in 2005, but they have not missed the playoffs since. The Jackets have gone 116-15 over the past decade and has not lost to a St Johns County opponent since 2007. The 2014 Jackets reeled off 6 wins to start the season before their only regular season loss against Clay by 4 points. They made it to the regional semi-finals which for most teams would be enough for most teams to consider it a successful season, but the Jackets are primed to advance further in 2015.
Behind 3-year starting quarterback Cole Northrup, the offense is in position to excel this year with leading rusher Jaquise Russell also coming back in his junior year. The 2014 roster was crowded with senior receivers that all shared targets, but this will create an opportunity for wide out Donald Sapp to excel who ranked 3rd in receptions a year ago.
Coach Joey Wiley has been in charge of the Jacket program since 1996 where he has amassed a 190-43 record and has built champions year after year. St. Augustine has won 11 districts in a row, two state runner-ups and one state championship during Wiley’s tenure.
The Jackets will open the 2015 season against Baker County at home, but everyone seems to be looking forward to the October 17th matchup against Ed White who got the best of the Jackets in the regional semi finals last year.

Spartans Look to Build on Historic Season
St. Johns Country Day School heads into the 2015 season with history on their side; the 2014 Spartans completed a school-best 8-1 record.
This year’s campaign may prove to be a bit more of a challenge, as many of the team’s weapons have moved on after graduation. Leading receiver Billy Sellinger will look to take command of the offense, as he will be expected to handle duties at quarterback throughout the year as well.
“Our leading statistical players were seniors,” said Spartans head coach Todd Zehner. “We will have lots of question marks. But our kids are willing to work…We have a young, energetic group.”
A 17-15 loss to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (St. Augustine, Fla.) was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season for the Spartans. The team looks to continue their winning ways as they take to the road for their first game against Munroe (Quincy, Fla.) on Sept. 4.

Blue Devils Looking to Win
It has been over 2 years since the Blue Devils last won a football game, but head coach Rayshawn Tiller is confident that his four captains Kyler Day, Eli Butler, Corday Stafford and Jeremy Kowkabany will find a way to guide the team to wins in 2015.
“This year, we will take it one moment at a time,’” says Tiller. “ We want to be more competitive in the fourth quarter and if we do that, 5-5 is a very doable record.”
The Stanton defense returns 8 starters including senior safety Luis Perez who led the team in tackles a year ago. Switching to linebacker in 2015 will be Eli Butler who coach Tiller said is like having a coach on the field.
Offensively, lineman Jeremy Kowkabany will provide great protection for senior quarterback Kyler Day who has high hopes for the offense in 2015. At Day’s disposal will be playmakers Eddie Tiller, Noah Hall, Laterrian Moore and Corday Stafford.
Coach Tiller says this is one of the best off-seasons he has been a part of since 2005. Stanton lost four seniors to graduation and a few players elected to transfer, but the players that have remained with the program have bought in to coach Tiller’s team concepts.
Stanton will open the season on the road against Terry Parker, another program that went winless in 2014.

Brave’s Productive Off-Season Building Confidence
New head coach Tommy Balom is inheriting a team that went winless in 2014. Balom has served as an assistant in the program for the past 3 seasons under former head coach Randy Glass. Optimism is building around the program and they are looking to make 2014 a distant memory. The Braves have already taken a step towards that goal by evidence in their spring game against Fernandina Beach where they won 34-0. That 34 point total surpasses what the Braves were able to accomplish all of last year combined.
It can be expected that this team will be physical and disciplined under coach Balom.

Trinity
Trinity Continues as Flagship Program in NE Florida
Last year was another banner year for the Trinity Christian Conquerors, earning a 12-2 record and claiming their second 3A state title in just as many years.
The 2014 roster was one for the ages. 12 players signed with FBS schools including defensive back Kevin Toliver who ranked 10th nationally in the ESPN 300 ratings. It would normally devastate any team to lose just one blue-chip prospect, but the Conquerors are reloading again for 2015. Senior quarterback Billy Cobb will bring a tremendous amount of experience as a starter. Cobb passed for 1,770 yards and 27 TDs. Cobb will have a host of offensive weapons including running back Jalin Buie, wideout J.C Flowers and transfer from First Coast D.J. Matthews. Matthews as a sophomore, lead the Buccaneers in receiving yards.
The deepest unit in 2015 will be Trinity’s secondary. Tyreke Johnson as a freshman last year led the team with 3 interceptions on a senior heavy defense. Also returning is Ohio State commit Shaun Wade and Reggie Gunn. North Carolina commit Dominique Ross will be transitioning from defensive end to outside linebacker this year.
This year, Trinity will only play five games against Northeast Florida opponents. Coach Dorminey is known for scheduling quality out of area opponents. Last year this included traveling to both IMG Academy and Buford(GA) which ended up being their only two blemishes on the schedule. Dorminey insists that those types of games are what helps his teams in the playoffs. The 2015 schedule will include trips to Godby and Lincoln in Tallahassee as well as hosting 8A opponent West Orange (Miami).

University Christian
Toughness is a Way of Life
The Christians finished an impressive 2014 season with an 8-4 record, including a perfect 5-0 standing in district play. They carried high hopes into the postseason, but were defeated in the second round by the Eagles of North Florida Christian School (Tallahassee, Fla.).
“At the end of the day, we want to win,” said University Christian head coach David Perland. “We have to learn to finish. Our players are motivated; they do not like to lose.”
The Christians are returning 14 starters; seven on each side of the ball.
“The key factor is tougness,” Coach Perland said. “We teach our players to be tough, both physically and mentally. We tell them to leave everything on the field.”
The team appears to be more than ready to build on their 2014 campaign, and Coach Perland has faith that this year’s team is more than capable of improving on the foundation laid a season ago.
“We approach every game the same,” he said. “Our goals for this season are to win our district, win state, and become a family. I believe that this team is fully equipped and capable of doing all three.”

Warriors Backfield Ready to Run in 15’
The Warriors finished the 2014 season an even .500 overall and in the district (2-2). They picked up wins against Jackson, Chiefland, Baldwin, Fernandina, and Keystone Heights but will need to muster wins against district front runners Bolles and Raines in 2015 to be able to continue play into the post-season.
Returing to the offense is Nassau County elite running back Davion Dubose who earned all area accolades from picking up 1,518 yards and 12 TDs a year ago. The Warriors will be without leading tackler Michael Dudzinksi who registered 137 tackles, but defensive back transfer Ke’Shan Pennamon will bring a much needed boost to the secondary.
West Nassau will face all three Nassau County schools in 2015.

Westside
Westside Wolverines Improving on Reputation
In 2014, Class 5A District 4 came down to a 3-way tie between Westside, Ribault and Bishop Kenny. Kenny would go on to win the shootout and claim the district title, but a second place finish by the Wolverines qualified them to advance to the FHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2007.
Coach Rodney DuBose was extremely proud of his team last year, especially going 6-1 in the district, which allowed them the opportunity to continue play after the majority of area is already looking forward to basketball season. “Our team grew throughout the season. We played a tough non-district schedule, which prepared us for district play. We were a very talented team with good size and a lot of speed.”
During the off-season, coach DuBose has addressed a key element missing from last year’s team. “Our weakness was strength. We have dedicated our offseason to improve our overall strength.”
The Wolverines will be returning six offensive starters and four defensive. Amari DuBose who led the team in passing yards, rushing yards and total touchdowns last year, spearheads the offensive attack in 2015. The Wolverine ground game is anchored by returning offensive lineman Michael Olak and Anthony Medlock, which should make it easier on a backfield that has no starting experience. On defense, college prospects Darius Hall and Sidney Stokes will look to limit opposing quarterbacks in a pass heavy district.
“It is a major point of emphasis to improve our reputation and relevance in our community,” said coach DuBose. “We want to give our school and community something to be proud of.”

Wolfson
Wolfson Looking to Improve in Year 2 Under Bullock
Last year, the Wolfpack finished 1-9 in coach Toby Bullocks first year with the program and has not had a winning season since 2004. Bullock was hired in June last year after the school had hired Tom Williams a month earlier whom abruptly resigned before ever really getting settled in. This left coach Bullock with only 2 months to prepare for the season and build a relationship with the players.
The Wolfack’s lone win in 2014 was over district rival Stanton 45-0. There is currently a lot of uncertainty around the quarterback position as Shawn Morgan and Keon Wise have both left the transferred to other area schools.

Yulee
Backfield Duo Key to Hornet’s District Hopes
Yulee emerged as the top team in Nassau County last year by beating West Nassau and Fernandina Beach, but the Hornets want more than just the county in 2015.
The running attack led by tandem backs Kris Maxie and Jamari Peacock contributed greatly to the teams 2,700 rushing yards in 2014. Peacock, a bruising 220lb running back currently holds offers from the likes of Florida State, Florida and Georgia Southern and is expected to be the next great back out of Nassau County since Derrick Henry. Receiver Bryce Oldaker averaged 18 YPC in 2014 and has developed into a prominent threat in the run first offense.
Yulee will move from a seven team district in 5A to a five team district with Paxon, Ribault, Suwannee and Stanton. In 2014, the Hornets walked away with wins over Paxon and Stanton, which should make this years campaign to a district title manageable.
Coach Bobby Ramsay is entering his seventh season at Yulee and has never ended the season with any less than 7 wins until 2014.
