Football Player Tackled a Referee After Ejection
On Dec. 3, an Edinburg (Texas) football player tackled a referee after being ejected from the game. Emmanuel Duron, the player, was ejected after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Duron then ran back onto the field to tackle the referee who ejected him.
The senior defensive end was escorted out of the stadium by a team of Edinburg police officers. He was charged with class A assault on Dec. 4.
Fred Gracia, the referee, laid on the turf for several minutes before getting up and leaving the field.
Edinburg head coach J.J. Lejia declined to comment on the incident, but expressed disappointment that the incident overshadowed the game, according to The Monitor’s Andrew McCulloch. The Edinburg team won the game, but were eliminated from the playoffs due to Duron’s actions.
