6 MLB Stars from the Ranks of Alabama High School Baseball

A number of current MLB greats have come out of the ranks of Alabama high school baseball. Here’s a look at six of the state’s best in the big leagues.

Tim Anderson

A Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa product, Anderson is arguably the biggest name from Alabama high school baseball currently playing in the major leagues. Anderson recently concluded his seventh MLB season, all with the Chicago White Sox. The veteran shortstop slashed .301/.339/.395 in 79 games this season.

Kyle Wright

Having attended Buckhorn before playing collegiately at Vanderbilt, Wright enjoyed a breakout season with the Atlanta Braves in 2022. Making a career-high 30 starts, the right-hander led MLB with 21 wins while recording a 3.19 ERA and a 174:53 K:BB ratio.

David Robertson

Similar to Anderson, Robertson played high school baseball in the Tuscaloosa area; he graduated from Paul W. Bryant High prior to playing collegiately at Alabama. He’s still in action at the time of this writing, playing in the World Series with the NL champion Philadelphia Phillies. The 14-year veteran posted a 2.40 ERA with 20 saves in 58 games with the Phillies and Chicago Cubs this season.

Kendall Graveman

Graveman, an eight-year MLB veteran, is coming off a strong 2022 season with the Chicago White Sox in which he posted a 3.18 ERA with six saves in 65 IP. Graveman attended Benjamin Russell High School before going to play collegiately at Mississippi State.

Clay Holmes

A ninth-round pick in 2011 from Slocomb High School, Holmes is coming off a career-year with the New York Yankees in his season in the major leagues. In 63.2 IP with the AL East champions, Holmes owned a 2.54 ERA with 20 saves and a 65:20 K:BB ratio.

Craig Kimbrel

One of the best relievers to ever come from Alabama high school baseball, Kimbrel attended Lee-Huntsville before going to play collegiately at Wallace State. A 13-year MLB veteran with 394 career saves, Kimbrel made 63 appearances this season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he owned a 3.75 ERA with 22 saves.
