4 Questions with The Villages Charter Basketball Coach Colt McDowell

We spoke with The Villages Charter basketball coach Colt McDowell about his team’s outlook for the upcoming 2022-23 season.

Q: Your Villages Charter basketball team won 20+ games and a district title and made a regional semifinal appearance. What are your thoughts on what this team accomplished a year ago?

A: The team came together, especially in the second half of the year, and really started to understand their roles and jobs that needed to be done. I’m proud of them for the 20+ wins and district championship. It was a great game against Satellite that could have gone either way, and all in all, we became the best we could become last year, and that’s all we can ask for.

Q: Sam Walters returns after a 2021-22 season in which he averaged 24.6 ppg and 9.9 rpg. What are you looking to see from him entering his senior year?

A: Obviously the continued production. It might be in different ways because more people will be keyed on him than they were last year. Maybe he has to average a few more assists a game, and his points per game may or may not be down depending on how he is defended. [We need] production, but also leadership. He’s a guy who’s been there and done it and knows what it takes to win at the highest level.

Q: What do you believe will be some of the strengths of this 2022-23 Villages Charter basketball team?

A: Our work ethic and dedication. The group of guys really like practicing and being in the gym. They love to work on their game and be in practice. We have a level of talent that I think is as good as anybody we will see in our class. The key will be if we can put it all together and grow in toughness and togetherness.

Q: Overall, what excites you most about the upcoming season?

A: We have a mix of some experience with some youth and inexperience. Seeing how those older guys can mesh with the younger guys and how the younger guys can grow up during the year. We’ve got a lot of length. We’ve got three or four kids who are 6-foot-6 or bigger, so we’ve got a lot of length.

Looking forward to watch Issac. He’s going to be our point guard this year, and he did a great job for us during the summer, and Ben Koubek at off-guard, both juniors who could really help us a lot. We’ve got some senior leadership mixed in some young guys, and a few other guys who have some experience but haven’t played a ton on varsity, so it should be a good combination.
