4 Questions With Brooks County Football Head Coach Maurice Freeman

We spoke with Brooks County football head coach Maurice Freeman about his expectations for next season.

Q: Everyone associates you with Brooks County and Trojans football, but you have been with a couple of other programs. What other schools have you been at?

A: From 1989-94 at Northeast Macon as the DB coach and defensive coordinator, 1994-98 as the Brooks County head coach, 1998-2002 as the Southwest Macon head coach and athletic director, 2002-08 as the Brunswick head coach, and 2008 to present at Brooks County as head coach and athletic director.

Q: Let’s talk about last season and how close you guys came to winning it all.

A: I thought we played a pretty good first half. … Our Quarterback unfortunately broke his ankle a little bit before halftime. That put us in a bad spot. Then our best lineman had a high ankle sprain, and that kind of gave us a little downer, and we gave up a couple big plays. I think Irwin played a great game, but I thought it was close. That’s just part of the game: You win some, you lose some.

Q: I don’t think coaches’ families are given enough credit for their love and support. How has your family supported you?

A: Unfortunately, you never go too much time with your children because you’re coaching someone else’s kids, but my youngest child was able to spend a lot of time on the sideline at practice and games. If you notice, in the state championship game she was actually the get-back coach.

My wife is a middle school principal, and thank goodness she’s at every game, but we just don’t get to spend that time together because I’m on the sideline and she’s in the stands. But she is extremely supportive; we’ve enjoyed the ride.

Q: You’ll have some new faces coming in to compete for playing time this season. What do you think about your 2021-22 Trojan team?

A: That look for the 2021 season is very optimistic. We’ve got some talented players returning on offense. We need a few more linemen. We’ve definitely got to work on depth. We have a new quarterback, Jamall Sanders, with great speed, a good arm, and he’s a slasher, so he’s a dual-threat. We will just have to work our offense around him and Arnold, our talented RB. I do think we have a chance to be pretty good again this year.
