2022 MLB Draft: 6 Likely Early-Rounders From Texas

2022 MLB Draft: 6 Likely Early-Rounders from Texas

Similar to Florida, Georgia, and California, Texas is expected to see a significant number of high school players selected in the 2022 MLB Draft. Following is a look at some of the leading names in that group, each of whom is rated among MLB Pipeline’s top 250 available prospects available.

Jett Williams

The first Texas high school player who could come off the board as early as the mid to late first round is Williams, a shortstop from Rockwall-Heath High School. The Mississippi State commit has exciting hitting tools from the right side of the plate, combined with impressive speed at 5-foot-8.

Cole Phillips

A 6-foot-3 right-hander with an electric fastball, Phillips is likely to be selected at any point within the second or third rounds. Phillips, an Arkansas commit who attended Boerne High School, had Tommy John surgery during the 2022 spring season, but should still be one of the state’s top picks.

Jalin Flores

Another one of the top shortstops from the state, Flores could also hear his name called at some point in the second or third rounds. The Brandeis High School standout and Texas commit is coming off an impressive 2021 senior season in which he hit .417 with 20 extra base hits, seven of which were home runs.

Chase Shores

Shores is a 6-foot-8 right-hander with a plus fastball and solid off-speed pitches; there are few pitchers from Texas with better pure stuff. The LSU commit and Legacy High School graduate will likely come off the board at some point within the third round.

Jeric Curtis

Curtis, an outfielder from Tomball Memorial High School, is an intriguing prospect who could go as early as the third round. The Texas Tech commit is not only a strong hitter, he also sets himself apart with his elite speed, which ranks as an 80 on MLB’s 20/80 scale.

Jayson Jones

The final name from Texas to potentially go in the top three rounds of the 2022 MLB Draft is Jones, a third baseman from Braswell High School. The Arkansas commit has impressive power from the right side of the plate, as well as a plus arm for his position.
