1. St. John Bosco (CA)

A team that has not dropped out of the top-3 all season, California’s St. John Bosco takes over the No. 1 spot after their 24-22 victory over previously top-ranked Mater Dei two weeks ago in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship Game at the Rose Bowl. Previously ranked No. 2, the Braves (12-1) will conclude their 2022 season this Saturday night when they collide with Serra for the CIF Open Division state championship.

2. Mater Dei (CA)

Falling from the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, Mater Dei now sits at No. 2 after its 24-22 loss to St. John Bosco. With the defeat, the Monarchs’ season officially came to a close; they finished with a 12-1 overall record.

1. Mater Dei (CA)

Mater Dei (12-0) remains in the No. 1 spot after dominant playoff wins over JSerra Catholic (54-14) and Los Alamitos (52-0 last Friday night). Next up for the Monarchs is a highly anticipated rematch with St. John Bosco; Mater Dei won earlier this season, 17-7.

2. St. John Bosco (CA)

Speaking of the Braves, St. John Bosco (11-1) returns to the No. 2 ranking for the first time since that aforementioned loss to Mater Dei, rising a spot from their previous No. 3 ranking. The Braves’ playoff matchup with the Monarchs this Friday likely will decide the No. 1 ranking. They’re coming off back-to-back postseason wins, having defeated Orange Lutheran 49-14 and Mission Viejo 41-6.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)

St. Thomas Aquinas (11-0) also rises a spot to No. 3 in the nation after back-to-back wins in the Florida Class 3M playoffs. Having defeated Coconut Creek 59-14, as well as Atlantic 63-14, the Raiders will face another unbeaten team, Blanche Ely, this Friday night in a regional final.

4. Miami Central (FL)

Also climbing one spot this week is yet another Florida unbeaten, Miami Central (11-0). The Rockets picked up two wins in the Florida Class 2M playoffs, defeating St. Brendan 60-0 and Miami Northwestern 34-30. They’ll play in the 2M regional final round Friday night against Norland, an opponent they defeated 53-7 earlier this season.

5. IMG Academy (FL)

IMG Academy also moves up a spot this week after concluding their 2022 season last Friday night in a big way, defeating St. Frances Academy (MD) in a big national showdown by a final of 27-16. The Ascenders finished the year with an 8-1 overall record.

6. St. Frances Academy (MD)

The Panthers drop four spots to No. 6 following their 27-16 loss to IMG Academy on Friday night. They did, however, pick up a 34-10 win over Clarkson North (AK) two weeks ago. They conclude their 2022 season with an 8-1 record.

Mater Dei Holds Firm at No. 1

Updated 11/07/22

With almost all states nationwide having begun postseason play, here’s the latest installment of our 2022 high school football top 10, which saw no change for the second consecutive update.

1. Mater Dei (CA)

Coming off an idle week, as well as a 48-17 road win at Servite two weeks ago, California’s Mater Dei remains in the No. 1 spot entering the week. The Monarchs, who have yet to lose the top ranking this season, begin the playoffs with a matchup against JSerra Catholic.

2. St. Frances Academy (MD)

After big wins over Arundel and St. Thomas More, the Panthers remain undefeated at 7-0. St. Frances Academy has two games remaining on its 2022 schedule in the next two weeks, both of which come at home against Clarkson North (AK) and IMG Academy (FL), the latter of which is likely the nation’s top game that week.

3. St. John Bosco (CA)

Like Mater Dei, St. John Bosco was idle last week, with their most recent contest having been an impressive 56-14 in-state home win over Santa Margarita. The Braves begin the playoffs Friday night against Orange Lutheran, an opponent they defeated 48-7 a few weeks ago.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)

Remaining in the No. 4 spot, St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off an idle week, with the Raiders having previously capped their undefeated regular season with a 44-0 win against Boyd Anderson two weeks ago. They enter the playoffs as the likely state title favorite in Florida’s Class 3M.

5. Miami Central (FL)

Miami Central also was idle last week, with the No. 5 Rockets having previously concluded their undefeated regular season two weeks ago with a 50-14 win over Monsignor Pace. They enter the playoffs as the arguable state title favorite in a deep Florida Class 2M.

6. IMG Academy (FL)

The Ascenders remain at the No. 6 spot, despite having been as dominant as almost any team nationwide in the past two weeks. IMG Academy outscored Middletown (DE) and West Toronto Prep a combined 154-0 and will conclude its 2022 season in two weeks with the aforementioned matchup against No. 2 St. Frances Academy.

7. Bishop Gorman (NV)

Bishop Gorman remains at the No. 7 spot after two dominant playoff wins, defeating Faith Lutheran and Desert Pines by a combined 113-3. The Gaels will take on Liberty Friday night for their next playoff matchup.

8. Buford (GA)

Buford added two additional blowout wins to their impressive resume over the last two weeks, topping both Mountain View and Central Gwinnett. The Wolves will begin postseason play this week against Peachtree Ridge.

9. Chaminade-Madonna (FL)

The Lions picked up noteworthy wins in recent weeks over St. John Paul II Academy and Treasure Coast to conclude the regular season undefeated. They’ll begin postseason play next week against Avant Garde.

10. Westlake (TX)

Rounding out the Top 10 is Westlake High School, which concluded its regular season last week with a dominant 70-10 win over Johnson, adding to a resume that includes a 45-0 road win at Bowie the week prior.

Updated 10/11/22

After witnessing the game of the year in high school football last Friday night, we present our latest national Top 10 rankings.

1. Mater Dei (CA)

Having held the No. 1 ranking the entire season, Mater Dei solidified its grasp on the top spot last Friday night with a 17-7 win over in-state rival St. John Bosco. The win erased any doubts observers may have had after the Monarchs’ close 21-13 victory at JSerra Catholic the week prior. Remaining undefeated at 7-0 overall, they resume Trinity League play over the next two weeks with matchups against Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita.

2. St. Frances Academy (MD)

For the first time this season, there is a new No. 2 team in our national Top 10 rankings as St. Frances Academy in Maryland rises a spot from No. 3. The Panthers traveled to Hawaii two weeks ago to defeat Kahuku 22-15 prior to their bye week this past week. St. Frances returns to action in two weeks with a trip to face in-state Arundel.

3. St. John Bosco (CA)

Having suffered its first loss of the season last Friday night against Mater Dei, the Braves fall only one spot to No. 3 in this week’s update. They also own a 49-3 win at Servite since the previous update. St. John Bosco will remain in Trinity League play over the next two weeks, with games against JSerra Catholic and Orange Lutheran.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)

6. IMG Academy (FL)

The Ascenders picked up a notable win two weeks ago when they traveled to Alabama to defeat Central-Phenix City, 41-26. They now turn their attention to in-state American Collegiate this week, and they play Middletown (DE) the week after.

7. Bishop Gorman (NV)

The Gaels, who remain at No. 7, were about as dominant as you could imagine over the past two weeks, routing in-state Canyon Springs and Legacy by a combined margin of 127-0. Between now and the next update, Bishop Gorman will conclude regular season play with in-state meetings against Palo Verde and Foothill.

8. Buford (GA)

Remaining in the No. 8 spot, Buford is coming off a bye week, which followed a 23-3 home win over defending state champion Collins Hill the week prior. 9. Chaminade-Madonna (FL)

The Lions have not played since the previous update and remain at the No. 9 spot because of it. Chaminade-Madonna will return to play this week with a matchup against Somerset Academy Key, followed by Avant Garde the week after.

Updated 9/26/22

In our latest Top 10 national rankings for the 2022 high school football season, California’s Mater Dei remains No. 1 and Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna moves up a spot from 10 to 9.

1. Mater Dei (CA)

California power Mater Dei has still not done a thing to lose its No. 1 overall ranking, with the Monarchs entering the week undefeated at 5-0. Coming off a bye week, they are faced with two big tests between now and our next update, both against in-state programs. First up is JSerra Catholic, followed by a massive showdown with undefeated St. John Bosco.

2. St. John Bosco (CA)

The Braves continue to remain close behind Mater Dei at No. 2 ahead of their looming showdown on October 7. St. John Bosco, which has outscored opponents by a cumulative 242-28 so far this season, has an in-state matchup on deck this week – the Braves will travel to Servite to take on a Friars team, with whom they split two meetings a year ago.

3. St. Frances Academy (MD)

Playing a tough schedule that includes teams from across the country, St. Frances Academy continues to impress with its No. 3 ranking. Since the previous update, the Panthers have gone on the road to Florida and South Carolina and earned big wins against Venice and Dutch Fork, respectively.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)

The Raiders still hold the billing of top team in Florida and maintain their No. 4 ranking in this week’s update. Since the previous update, St. Thomas Aquinas has picked up two notable in-state wins over Western and Treasure Coast, outscoring the two by a combined 59-7.

5. Miami Central (FL)

The Rockets continue to impress in the Sunshine State, holding firm to their No. 5 ranking in this week’s update. Currently undefeated at 4-0, Miami Central is coming off an impressive 43-7 win over Dillard last week. A big showdown with Miami Northwestern looms in two weeks.

6. IMG Academy (FL)

IMG Academy came off a bye with a road game in Alabama, where the Ascenders beat one of the state’s top teams, Central-Phenix City, 41-26. Looking ahead to the next two weeks, IMG Academy will be favored in both contests, including an in-state opponent this week in Jones.

7. Bishop Gorman (NV)

Since the last update, the Gaels have simply been dominant. Remaining at No. 7, Bishop Gorman defeated Brookwood (GA) and in-state Arbor View during that span, outscoring the two a cumulative 133-10.

8. Buford (GA)

Buford remains at the No. 8 spot in this week’s update after in-state wins over Carver-Atlanta and Marietta. Now sitting at 5-0 on the year, the Wolves enter region play, where matchups against Collins Hill and Mill Creek await.

9. Chaminade-Madonna (FL)

The Lions continue to impress while playing about as tough a schedule as you could imagine, rising a spot to No. 9 in this update. Over the last two weeks, Chaminade-Madonna has defeated two notable in-state opponents in American Heritage and Gulliver Prep, scoring 25+ points in each contest.

10. Westlake (TX)

Westlake dropped a spot to No. 10, with the Chaparrals have played only once since the previous update. That game was a 35-20 win over Lake Travis, bringing Westlake’s record to an undefeated 4-0.

Updated 9/12/22

Continuing our every-other-week rankings of the top 10 teams in high school football, following is a look at which teams rose, which fell, and what lies ahead this Friday night.

1. Mater Dei (CA) E

California’s Mater Dei began the 2022 season with the No. 1 overall ranking and still has done nothing to relinquish that spot. The Monarchs, who currently sit at 4-0 on the year, have picked up in-state wins over Centennial and La Miranda in the last two weeks and have enjoyed stellar quarterback play from junior Elijah Brown.

2. St. John Bosco (CA) E

The Braves, also in the conversation for who is California’s top team, remain at No. 2, not far behind Mater Dei. St. John Bosco (3-0) is coming off dominant wins over in-state Bishop Amat and Central Catholic (OR). The Braves outscored their opponents 91-7 in those two contests.

3. St. Frances Academy (MD) E

The Panthers also do not move from their No. 3 ranking. They have played only once since the previous update, routing DeSoto (TX) 47-7, but they have a big matchup this Friday night, when they travel to Florida for a showdown with Venice.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) E

The No. 4 spot on this list does not change either, with St. Thomas Aquinas remaining the top team in Florida. The 3-0 Raiders have posted two dominant in-state wins since the previous update, over Fort Myers and Cocoa, but they’ll be tested over the next two weeks against both Western and Treasure Coast.

5. Miami Central (FL) E

The Rockets rose all the way from unranked to No. 5 in the previous update after a 20-14 over IMG Academy, and they remain in that same spot this week. Miami Central has played only one game since the last update, topping in-state Booker T. Washington 36-19.

6. IMG Academy (FL) E

The Ascenders remain at No. 6, having bounced back in a big way after their season-opening loss to Miami Central. Included in that span are blowout wins over De Smet Jesuit (MO) and East (UT), with the Ascenders outscoring those opponents a combined 113-19.

7. Bishop Gorman (NV) E

Remaining at No. 7, Nevada power Bishop Gorman also has bounced back since losing to top-ranked Mater Dei in late August. The Gaels have dominated the past two weeks against St. Louis (HI) and Hamilton (AZ), outscoring those squads by a combined 101-14.

8. Buford (GA) +2

Georgia’s top team rises two spots from No. 10 to No. 8. The Wolves (3-0) have played only once since the previous update, defeating North Cobb 21-14.

9. Westlake (TX) -1

Once again, Westlake drops a spot in this week’s update, but it is no fault of their own. The Chaparrals are off to a 3-0 start with blowout wins over Judson and Akins since the last update.

10. Chaminade-Madonna (FL) NR

The Lions were the lone team to enter the Top 10 this week. They’re off to a 3-0 start that includes impressive wins over the last two weeks, when they  beat both Dillard and Miami Northwestern.

Updated 8/30/22

Prior to the start of the 2022 high school football season a few weeks back, we released an initial look at the Top 10 teams in the country. Now that the season is officially underway, here’s an update to that list based on what we have seen so far.

1. Mater Dei (CA) E

The Monarchs held the No. 1 ranking in the preseason and have done absolutely nothing to lose the top spot up to this point. Sitting at 2-0 for the year, Mater Dei owns one of the nation’s more impressive wins as the Monarchs picked up a 24-21 road victory last Friday night over Bishop Gorman (NV). They enter their first in-state matchup this week with a trip to Centennial.

2. St. John Bosco (CA) E

St. John Bosco sat just behind the Monarchs in our 2022 preseason high school football Top 10. The Braves, led by five-star Matayo Uiagalelei, remain at No. 2 in this update after opening their season last Friday with a dominant road win, topping Texas’ Allen High School 52-14.

3. St. Frances Academy (MD) +1

The Panthers began their tough 2022 schedule on Saturday night, defeating East Saint Louis (IL) 20-13. They are the first team to move up a spot in this week’s update.

4. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) +1

The Raiders began their 2022 season with a noteworthy performance last Saturday, topping St. Joseph’s Prep 48-37. Moving up a spot from the initial rankings to No. 4, St. Thomas Aquinas has a legit argument to be the top team in Florida at the moment.

5. Miami Central (FL) NR

Miami Central makes the biggest move of the update. After previously being unranked, the Rockets sit at No. 5 after a big upset Week 1 victory in which they defeated IMG Academy 20-14 on the road.

6. IMG Academy (FL) -3

The Ascenders were upset by No. 5 Miami Central last Friday night 20-14 on their home field. Despite the loss, however, IMG is still easily among the top 10 teams in high school football.

7. Bishop Gorman (NV) -1

Bishop Gorman drops only one spot in the update. The Gaels’ lone loss came last week at the hands of No. 1 Mater Dei 24-21. They should feature often among this list as the season goes along.

8. Westlake (TX) -1

While the Chaparrals did drop one spot from the preseason, it is no fault of their own. Westlake opened the 2022 season with an impressive win last Friday night, topping Ridge Point 44-14.

9. Centennial (CA) -1

Despite dropping one spot, the Huskies are off to an impressive 2-0 start to the season. Already owning wins over Santiago and Cathedral Catholic, Centennial faces a massive showdown with top-ranked Mater Dei on Friday night.

10. Buford (GA) E

Our 2022 high school football Top 10 rankings this week are rounded out by the Wolves, who opened the season with an impressive 38-7 win in Week 1 over Thompson (AL) and backed that up a week ago with a 56-7 route of Mallard Creek. With a showdown against North Cobb up next, Buford enters the week as the top team in Georgia.
