2022 Georgia High School Football Rankings: Classes 1A-3A

Sandy Creek Claims Top Spot in Season-Ending Top-25

Final Rankings – Updated 12/11/22

Our final 2022 Top-25 rankings for Georgia high school football Classes 1A-3A has a No. 1 team who is in the top spot for the first time, which proves it’s not how you start, but how you finish. The 3A state championship game saw defending state champion Cedar Grove going for the repeat against region 5-3A foe Sandy Creek. The Saints spent the entire season in the top spot in our poll, but the loss to the Patriots drop them to a final ranking of No. 5, and Sandy Creek is our top-rated team in the final Top-25 rankings.

The No. 2 team, Fitzgerald, lost their first game of the season to Thomson 32-27 and end up in the No. 6 spot.  Prince Avenue Christian ends the season at No. 2 after an impressive 52-34 win over Swainsboro in the Class A-D1 title game. The remaining state champion, Bowden, ends up in the fourth spot.

Second-Round Playoffs Week – Updated 11/13/22

Our updated 2022 Georgia high school football rankings for Classes 1A through 3A is a testament to how each of these teams deserves to be in the Top 25, as every team but two won its opening-round playoff game last week.

The programs that fell from our poll include the defending Class A state champion, Brooks County, which was upset by Bleckley County 14-10 at home. The Trojans suffered a major blow after losing starting quarterback Jamal Sanders late in the regular season, and his absence was felt. Bleckley moves back into the rankings with the victory.

Dawson County’s brief stay in our Top 25 is over, as the Tigers were defeated by Monroe Area. That opened the door for a new team to claim a spot, which ELCA assumed – the Chargers climb back into the poll at No. 25.

  1. Cedar Grove (3A) E

First-Round Playoffs Week – Updated 11/06/22

Much of our updated 2022 Georgia high school football rankings sees little movement, as almost every team heads into the first round of the state playoffs as the No. 1 or No. 2 seed. Week 12 – Updated 10/30/22

Our top seven teams hold their spot in this week’s update of our 2022 Georgia high school football rankings for Classes 1A-3A. The biggest drop was by Dougherty, which fell nine spots after their surprising 27-0 loss to Carver. The Trojans have lost two straight games after starting the season 8-0.

The Thomasville Bulldogs and the Worth County Rams are our two biggest movers in this week’s poll, with Thomasville’s Johnathon DeLay making a strong case for Coach of the Year after bringing his team back from an 0-2 start to recover nicely with a 7-3 record and a region championship. Jeffrey Hammond has his Worth County Rams playing great football as well; they  now have an 8-1 record after thumping Sumter County. Worth moves up into the top 20, climbing three spots to No. 18.

The top teams remain unchanged with Cedar Grove and Fitzgerald holding on to No. 1 and No. 2 spot, respectively.

Week 8 – Updated 10/2/22

We see Cedar Grove remain in the top spot with an impressive win over national power St. Johns from D.C. Fitzgerald remains solid at the No. 2 position. Dougherty leads a pack of several teams jumping up a spot from last week, with the Trojans moving up to No. 3.

Oconee County and Mary Persons each lost this past weekend and exit the poll for this week. That created an invitation for two new teams to move into the Top 25, as Hebron Christian and McIntosh County Academy make their debuts at No. 21 and No. 22, respectively.

Week 7 – Updated 9/25/22

Our Week 7 poll for Georgia Class A through 3A sees teams in spots 1 through 11 remain in their same position from last week. Despite dropping two games in a row to Class 7A teams, Cedar Grove remains the top team in our poll. Our logic is fairly simple: Cedar Grove has played a gauntlet of teams in the first half of the season, and they’ve agreed to play any team, regardless of school size. One other thing to consider: Cedar Grove has just one “home” game due to stadium availability. Here is our new Top 25:

  1. Cedar Grove (3A) E
  2. Fitzgerald (2A) E
  3. Pierce Co (2A) E
  4. Dougherty (3A) E
  5. Brooks County (AD-1) E

Week 6 – Updated 9/18/22

It sounds rather odd describing a 3A team losing to a 7A team as an upset, but we’re not sure how else to label a 16-point loss by Cedar Grove to anyone, even if it was to the undefeated Mill Creek Hawks. Despite that loss, the Saints of head coach John Adams remain in the top spot of our composite poll. In another battle of 3A vs. 7A last week, it was Sandy Creek pulling out the whipping stick and turning the tables on the defending 7A state champion, Collins Hill, by a 33-17 final. Those are just two examples of the games from this past Friday; let’s see how everyone fared in our top 25 rankings of 2022 Georgia high school football teams in Classes 1A through 3A.

  1. Cedar Grove (3A) E
  2. Fitzgerald (2A) E

Week 5 – Updated 9/11/22

It took a trio of teams a few weeks and some convincing wins to get here, but they made it into our ITG Next Georgia Top 25 high school football rankings for Classes A through 3A. Cook, after back-to-back wins over long-time powerhouses Brooks County and Clinch County, make its debut at No. 20. The Worth County Rams are another deserving Top 25 team after starting the season with four straight wins. The third new entry to crack our rankings is Northeast Macon, which earned its way in with an impressive three-touchdown win over previous seventh-ranked Carver-Columbus. Our top 6 remains unchanged from last week, while the Aaron Philo-led Wolverines of Prince Avenue Christian inches up two more spots after another win.

  1. Cedar Grove (3A) E

Week 4 – Updated 9/4/22

Our new Top 25 poll sees a bit more movement than what we had previously seen, with more teams changing spots from last week. Two teams that didn’t move, nor have they moved much in a while, are Cedar Grove and Fitzgerald at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Cedar Grove took care of the 7A Westlake Lions by a 30-20 score, although it’s worth mentioning that the Lions were without starting quarterback RJ Johnson. Still, Cedar Grove gets our vote for the top spot once again. Fitzgerald had to overcome a deficit for much of its game with Northeast Macon; the Purple Hurricane ultimately won by a point, 28-27. The big surprise was Brooks County falling to a pesky Cook team at Adel. Here is our Top 25 composite rankings of Classes 1A through 3A for Week 4 of the 2022 Georgia high school football season.

  1. Cedar Grove (3A) E
  2. Fitzgerald (2A) E
