Incarnate Word Takes Over No. 1 Ranking

The latest update of our national Top 10 rankings for high school girls basketball is headlined by a new No. 1 team for the first time this season.
1. Incarnate Word Academy (MO)
Incarnate Word Academy takes over the No. 1 overall ranking this week, with the Red Knights moving up a spot from No. 2. In the last three weeks the Red Knights earned notable in-state wins over the likes of Webster Groves and Pattonville.
2. Sidwell Friends (DC)
Previously top-ranked Sidwell Friends loses the No. 1 spot this week, but the Quakers don’t fall far as they come in here at No. 2. Over the last three weeks, Sidwell Friends picked up wins over St. Mary’s (CA), Bishop McNamara (MD), and Lone Peak (UT), but also suffered its first loss of the season to Long Island Lutheran (NY), 63-60.
3. Sierra Canyon (CA)
Sierra Canyon continues to make a strong case as California’s top team, with the Trailblazers remaining in the No. 3 ranking this week. Still undefeated at 12-0, the Trailblazers picked up wins over Bishop Gorman (NV), George Washington (CO), Coeur d‘Alene (ID), and Putnam City West (OK) in the last three weeks, as well as Jefferson and Jesuit from Oregon.
4. Montverde Academy (FL)
Montverde Academy remains in the No. 4 spot this week, as the Eagles still remain unbeaten at 13-0. The Eagles’ last three weeks include a noteworthy in-state win over Lake Highland Prep, as well as victories over Olmsted Falls (OH) and Rutgers Prep (NJ).
5. Etiwanda (CA)
Etiwanda, which remains in the No. 5 spot, also makes a case as the top team in California. The Eagles remain unbeaten at 13-0, holding in-state wins in the last three weeks over St. Paul, Chaminade, Cardinal Newman, and St. Mary’s.
6. St. John-Vianney (NJ)
St. John-Vianney remains in the No. 6 spot, as the Lancers remain unbeaten at 6-0. Over the last three weeks, they own in-state wins over Mount St. Mary Academy, Matawan Regional, Long Branch, New Providence, and Westfield, as well as Bishop McNamara (MD).
7. Hopkins (MN)
The Royals remain at the No. 8 spot entering the week. Hopkins’ last three weeks included wins over in-state East Ridge, Park Center, and Owatonna.
8. Garfield (WA)
Garfield rises a spot to No. 8, with the Bulldogs remaining unbeaten so far this season. Over the last three weeks, Garfield owns in-state victories over Lakeside and Seattle Prep.
9. Long Island Lutheran (NY)
New York’s Long Island Lutheran makes its Top-10 debut this week. The Crusaders are unbeaten at 9-0 and own multiple impressive wins over the likes of Sidwell Friends (DC), La Jolla Country Day (CA), and Lake Highland Prep (FL).
10. La Jolla Country Day (CA)
La Jolla Country Day drops two spots to No. 10. The Torreys suffered their lone loss of the year two weeks ago to No. 9 Long Island Lutheran.

The latest update of our 2022-23 high school girls basketball national Top 10 rankings is headlined by the rise of Hopkins, La Jolla Country Day, and Garfield.
1. Sidwell Friends (DC)
Beginning with top-ranked Sidwell Friends, the Quakers remain in the No. 1 spot after a perfect 4-0 start to the season. Included in that stretch are wins over two Texas teams, Duncanville and South Grand Prairie, as well as Bishop McNamara (MD) and St. Paul VI (VA).
2. Incarnate Word Academy (MO)
The Red Knights (5-0) remain at No. 2 in this week’s update. Included in their unbeaten opening stretch are notable wins over Whitney Young (IL) and South Medford (OR).
3. Sierra Canyon (CA)
Sierra Canyon also is unbeaten so far this season. Included in Trailblazers’ last two weeks are wins over Utah teams Fremont and Lone Peak, as well as in-state Bonita Vista.
4. Montverde Academy (FL)
The Eagles, the top team in our Florida rankings, remain at No. 4 after an impressive 10-0 start. Included in their last two weeks were wins over Legacy Early College (SC) and The Webb School (TN), as well as in-state Sarasota.
5. Etiwanda (CA)
Etiwanda stays put at the No. 5 spot in this week’s update. The undefeated Eagles picked up in-state wins the last two weeks over Roosevelt, Aliso Niguel, Moreno Valley, Orange Lutheran, and Ontario Christian.
6. St. John-Vianney (NJ)
Having yet to begin play, the Lancers remain at the No. 6 spot. St. John-Vianney will face Bishop McNamara (MD) this Saturday.
7. Hopkins (MN)
Hopkins jumps a spot up to No. 7 after an undefeated start to the year. In the last two weeks, the Royals have picked up in-state wins over Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Maple Grove, and Eastview.
8. La Jolla Country Day (CA)
Unbeaten La Jolla Country Day also rises a spot this week, up to No. 8. Over the last two weeks, the Torreys have defeated in-state San Joaquin Memorial, as well as two Utah teams, Valley Vista and Desert Vista.
9. Garfield (WA)
Garfield moves up one place to No. 9. The Bulldogs own in-state wins over the last two weeks against West Seattle and Ballard.
10. DeSoto (TX)
DeSoto drops three spots to conclude the Top 10 at the No. 10 spot. The Eagles have picked up wins over the last two weeks against teams such as Fremont (UT) and Bartlett (TN), but are also the lone team in the Top 10 to have lost a game so far this year, falling to No. 4 Montverde Academy.

With the 2022-23 girls high school basketball season underway for many teams nationwide, here’s a look at who rose and who fell in our latest national Top 10 rankings.
1. Sidwell Friends (DC)
Similar to top-ranked Montverde Academy in our boys rankings, Sidwell Friends does not move a spot as the Quakers have yet to open their 2022-23 season. The Quakers begin play this week against Bishop McNamara (MD).
2. Incarnate Word Academy (MO)
Incarnate Word Academy remains at the No. 2 spot while also having yet to play a game. The Red Knights will tip off their 2022-23 season this week against in-state Villa Duchesne.
3. Sierra Canyon (CA)
Sierra Canyon stays at No. 3 after beginning the season 3-0 with wins over Duncanville and South Grand Prairie out of Texas, as well as Parkway in Louisiana. The Trailblazers have notable upcoming games against a pair of Utah teams, Fremont and Lone Peak.
4. Montverde Academy (FL)
Rising a spot is Montverde Academy, as the Eagles are off to a perfect 7-0 start to the season with wins over numerous solid teams, one of which is previous No. 3 DeSoto. The Eagles will return to action this Thursday against Legacy Early College (SC).
5. Etiwanda (CA)
One of the biggest risers of the week is Etiwanda – the Eagles climb two spots to No. 5 on the strength of a 4-0 start. They have notable in-state matchups in the next two weeks against teams such as Roosevelt, Aliso Niguel, and Moreno Valley.
6. St. John-Vianney (NJ)
St. John-Vianney has yet to begin its 2022-23 season and remains in the No. 6 spot. The Lancers begin play in the coming weeks against in-state Chatham and Trenton Catholic Academy.
7. DeSoto (TX)
The only team to fall in this week’s update is DeSoto, down three spots from No. 4. The Eagles sit at 5-2 overall, with one of those two losses coming to new No. 4 Montverde Academy. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier this week as they take on Texas (Texarkana, TX) and Bartlett (TN).
8. Hopkins (MN)
Hopkins remains in the No. 8 spot after their 2-0 start, with the wins coming over two Iowa teams, Bishop Garrigan and Dowling Catholic. The Royals have notable in-state matchups this week against Maple Grove and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
9. La Jolla Country Day (CA)
The Torreys remain at No. 9 after an impressive start in building a 4-0 record. La Jolla Country Day’s next matchup comes this week against Dobson (AZ).
10. Garfield (WA)
Rounding out this week’s Top 10 is Garfield, which remains in the No. 10 spot. The Bulldogs will begin play this week against in-state foe West Seattle.
Sidwell Friends Claims Preseason No. 1 Spot
As we are doing with boys high school basketball, we will release our national Top 10 rankings for girls high school basketball throughout the 2022-23 season, with updates occurring every other week. We begin here with our preseason Top 10.
1. Sidwell Friends (DC)
Coming off a 2021-22 season in which they went undefeated, Sidwell Friends of Washington, D.C. holds the No. 1 overall ranking as we enter the 2022-23 girls high school basketball season. The Quakers were one of the nation’s best a year ago, finishing with a perfect 30-0 overall record, as well as a 14-0 mark in DCSAA league play.
2. Incarnate Word Academy (MO)
Right alongside Sidwell Friends in the conversation for No. 1 is Missouri’s Incarnate Word Academy. The Red Knights also finished the 2021-22 season undefeated, fashioning a 29-0 record overall and a 10-0 mark in MWAA play.
3. Sierra Canyon (CA)
Coming in at No. 3 is California’s Sierra Canyon High School. The Trailblazers finished the 2021-22 season with a 30-2 overall record and are a near lock to be one of the Golden State’s best again in 2022-23.
4. DeSoto (TX)
DeSoto High School begins the year at No. 4 after a 2021-22 season in which the Eagles went 35-2. Both losses came to the No. 1 team on this list, Sidwell Friends.
5. Montverde Academy (FL)
The top team in our preseason Florida Class 4A-7A rankings, Montverde Academy begins the 2022-23 season ranked as the No. 5 team here. The Eagles are coming off a 20-3 season that included only one loss to an in-state team.
6. St. John-Vianney (NJ)
Coming at No. 6 to begin the year is a St. John-Vianney team that was one of the best in high school girls basketball a year ago. The Lancers finished the year with a 31-1 overall record, with their lone loss coming to No. 1 Sidwell Friends.
7. Etiwanda (CA)
California’s second team to make this list, Etiwanda begins the year ranked at No. 7. The Eagles are coming off a 29-1 season a year ago, with their lone loss coming in the season finale to No. 3-ranked Sierra Canyon.
8. Hopkins (MN)
Coming in at No. 8 is Hopkins High School of Minnesota. The Royals finished the 2021-22 season with a 28-1 overall record, with that one loss coming to top-ranked Sidwell Friends.
9. La Jolla Country Day (CA)
The third and final team from California in our preseason Top 10 is La Jolla Country Day, which begins the 2022-23 girls high school basketball at No. 9. The Torreys are coming off a 25-3 campaign a year ago, with two of those losses having been against teams ranked on this list.
10. Garfield (WA)
With a number of teams to choose from here, the final spot on the list goes to Garfield High School of Washington. The Bulldogs finished the 2021-22 season with a perfect 20-0 record.
