Young, Gast Headline Florida High School Football Week 3 Performances

Week 3 was headlined by one of the top players in Florida high school football. We look at his performance, along with seven more notable outings across the Sunshine State.

Richard Young – Lehigh

Week 3 of the 2022 Florida high school football season was highlighted by the performance of Young, a five-star Alabama commit who showed exactly why he has that lofty billing Friday night as Lehigh defeated Lake Gibson 26-20 on national TV. The state’s top running back rushed for 285 yards and 2 touchdowns on 32 carries, which included the game’s first score, a 90-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

Tyson Gast – Lake Gibson

Young was not the only standout in that Lehigh-Lake Gibson game – Gast also impressed for the Braves. The Lake Gibson senior wideout finished with 5 catches for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Haden Klees – Wakulla

Klees enjoyed a strong performance in the War Eagles’ 43-13 win over Munroe, completing 17-of-26 passes for 262 yards and 4 touchdowns. The junior also rushed for 49 yards on 6 carries.

Sammy Miller – Gibbs

The senior running back rushed for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 carries and made 1 tackle in Gibbs’ 37-20 loss to Northeast.

Malachi Hawkins – Marathon

A two-way player at Marathon, Hawkins rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in a 22-19 win over NSU University. Hawkins also made a notable impact defensively, collecting 5 tackles, 4 TFL, and 3 sacks.

Tanner Lanier – Wakulla

While Klees impressed on the offensive side of the ball for Wakulla, the same can be said for Lanier on defense. He collected 9 tackles and 3 sacks in the War Eagles’ 43-13 win over Munroe.

Cedric Baxter – Edgewater

Baxter is in the conversation with Young regarding who is the state’s top running back. He rushed for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries in Edgewater’s 26-14 win over West Orange. He also caught 2 passes for 27 yards.

Blake Murphy – American Heritage

Murphy was impressive throwing the ball in American Heritage’s 56-0 win over Glades Central, completing 5-of-8 passes for 72 yards and 4 touchdowns.
