Wolfson Football 2023 Team Preview

Wolfson Football 2023 Team Preview

We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Wolfson football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Wolfpack this season.

2022 Stats

  • Overall Record: 5-5
  • Points Scored: 221
  • Points Allowed: 238

Key Losses

New head coach Jermaine Wilson takes over a Wolfson team that finished a respectable 5-5 last year but will be a bit younger this season. Wolfson loses explosive RB Tyler Terry, who also played DB last season. One of the first major tasks for Wilson will be to replace the two QBs who played in 2022. Aidan Nicholls and Ryker Tomberlin split time as the Wolfpack signal caller, and both have graduated. Nicholls also saw time as a receiver and free safety last season. Two other CB/DB players will be missed with the graduation of Ryan Horton and Kohlton Schnetzler.

Who’s Back

A couple of players who had their moments last season will have the opportunity to make a bigger impact in 2023 as Wolfson seeks its first winning season since 2019. Senior Nicholas John Damone is a 6-foot, 2-inch, 213-pound returning TE/DE who could emerge as a leader for coach Wilson and the Wolfpack.

Returning as a receiving threat this year is senior Alex Mainor. Although he’s not the biggest guy on the field, he is a quick scatback-type receiver who can spread the field and also give Wolfson a threat in the run game. Junior Jordan Bell began to emerge as a key kick returner last season, and he’ll likely be the primary kick and punt returner this season on Wolfson’s special teams. Senior Cory Richardson can line up as a receiver or RB, and he’ll also play DB again this season.

What to Expect

Wolfson is hoping Wilson can come in and give the Wolfpack a winning season, and maybe even get them to a place they almost reached last year: the playoffs. Wolfson finished 5-5, coming up one win shy of getting the sole remaining at-large region playoff birth.

If anyone knows about turning a program around, it’s Wilson. He was the defensive coordinator for head coach Bobby Ramsey’s 2018 Mandarin coaching staff that oversaw the Mustangs turnaround from a 2-8 season to the Class 8A state championship the next year, defeating Miami Columbus.

Can Wilson do the same with this 2023 Wolfson football team? That remains to be seen, but Wolfpack fans will settle for baby steps. The last playoff win for Wolfson came in 1978, so a competitive team with a winning season is a start supporters will be happy with.

Prediction

They’ll be young, but 5-5 would be a solid start for the first-year head coach.

Game to Watch

The season opener against Baldwin on August 25.
