2023 Providence School Football Preview

We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Providence School football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Stallions this season.

2022 Stats

  • Overall Record: 5-5
  • Points Scored: 201
  • Points Allowed: 267

Key Losses

The Stallions will need to find a replacement for the team’s starting quarterback, as Brooks Hicken has graduated following a 2022 season that saw the 6-foot, 3-inch signal caller pass for 1,088 yards and 7 TDs, and rush for 3 TDs. One of Hicken’s top receivers, Jack Scheurer, also graduates. The wideout finished with 26 receptions, 575 receiving yards and 4 TDs last season.

Guard/MLB Luke Picerno will not return, joining another key members of last year’s defense, LB Braxton Manckus, who also graduates. The team will miss the services of big OLT Jacob Gray, who will be taking his 6-foot, 7-inch frame to Memphis University, where he will continue his football career with the Tigers.

Who’s Back

It looks like junior Mason Williams will be called on to take over the Stallions QB duties. Williams took a few snaps with the varsity, as well as the JV last season, so he was able to get some valuable experience running the offense. He completed 23 of 39 pass attempts with 2 TDs at the varsity level last season. He also carried the ball 38 times for 240 yards, so the young Williams could prove to be a dual threat as he moves into the full-time starting role of QB.

Senior RB/CB Jett Hood returns, and he offers the Stallions talent on both sides of the ball. He had 90 carries for 349 yards and 4 TDs, plus 18 catches for 274 yards and 3 TDs. He came up with 5 INT last season while adding 35 tackles from his corner spot.

Senior Tiago Tauler is another returning starter expected to make an impact on both sides of the ball, as he has done already. Tauler had 548 yards rushing and 6 TDs on 79 carries last season. He added a receiving TD, and defensively he had 25 tackles with an INT.

Senior John King is returning at LB with 60 tackles and 3 sacks to his credit. Finally, junior Sam Hayward returns at TE/LB/DE. Last season, Hayward caught 12 passes for 174 yards and 2 TDs, and he made 37 tackles, including 12 TFLs.

What to Expect

The Stallions went out and found former Jacksonville Jaguar offensive lineman Moe Williams to take over head coaching duties before the start of the 2022 season, hoping to reenergize a program that had enjoyed only one winning season (6-2 in 2019) in the previous five years while finishing a collective 17-26 over that period.

Williams immediately led the Stallions to their best record since 2019, finishing 5-5 last year. Now fans are hoping to see the team continuing to move in the right direction. Will it happen? There’s some nice talent coming back this year, and the key may fall on the shoulders of new QB Williams.

Prediction

Look for improvement from the Providence School football team with a 6-4 season in 2023.

Game to Watch

September 8 against Wolfson could be an early indication of how good the Stallions will be.
