For the first time in the 2015 season, the Tift County Blue Devils will be hosting a region contest on their own field. They opened region play with two road games: a tough 42-14 defeat at the hands of Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.) and a narrow 26-23 loss to Valdosta High that came down to the final minute of action.
While playing in front of the Tift County faithful should help to lift the morale of the Blue Devils, standing on the opposite sideline will be the still-undefeated Camden County Wildcats (Kingsland, Ga.). The Wildcats opened the second half of the season by having their way with the Winnersville duo, defeating Valdosta 31-10 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and besting the Lowndes Vikings 38-19 back in Kingsland.
This matchup should be heavy on the ground game, as both sides are strongly bolstered in the backfield. Tift County’s Barry Bennett (96 rushes, 461 yards, 12 touchdowns) and Camden’s Harrison Poole (50 rushes, 468 yards, seven touchdowns) and Brandon McMaster (65 rushes, 437 yards, five touchdowns) are the top three running backs in Region 1-AAAAAA (in terms of total yardage).
The region is always strong to the finish, and a win Friday would be huge in keeping the Wildcats at the top of the pile. They currently are tied with the defending-champion Colquitt County Packers for first place (7-0, 2-0 in region play).
