Weaver Wrestler Devin Anderson Voted ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month
Looking back now at the 2021-22 Alabama high school state wrestling championships, there may not have been two individual pins more impactful than Weaver’s Joshua Johannson and Devin Anderson.
Pushing Weaver past Ohatchee to claim the 1A/4A state title, as well as the Bearcats first in 18 years, the individual wins from Johannson and Anderson were massive for the Bearcats state title hopes. Because of this impactful win, Anderson in particular was voted our ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month for February, receiving 43.31 percent of the votes.
Securing the pin in the 182-pound championship match, Anderson would finish the season with an unbeaten record, as well as claiming 1A/4A Most Valuable Wrestler honors in the process.
When asked about what immediately went through his head when Anderson got the pin in the 182-pound championship match, Weaver head wrestling coach Andrew Fulmer stated, “That we are going to win our first team state championship in 18 years. Really thrilled that he put the exclamation point on our title run this year.”
When asked about what he saw that led up to this phenomenal senior season from Anderson, Fulmer stated, “He has grown over the years, and really developed into a great leader for us these past two years. He has wrestled through injuries, and always demands that everyone in the room give maximum effort every day.”
Speaking of becoming a leader, that is exactly what you could say that Anderson is when talking about this Weaver wrestling program.
“Devin has been a steady presence in our program throughout his six years in our program,” Fulmer said. “He was also in our youth program as well. He has grown so much from when he started. He took on a significant leadership role, and our kids really look up to him. He is a great wrestler, but an even better person. I was really excited that he ended his high school career undefeated and with a pin.”
