Valley High School Basketball Player Cam Dooley Named ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month for March 2024
A talented multi-sport athlete who put the finishing touches on an impressive high school career during February, Valley’s Cam Dooley has been voted the ITG Next Alabama March 2024 Male Athlete of the Month based on his play during the month.
Dooley received 60.99% of the possible votes over three additional finalists, which were as follows: Gaylesville baseball’s Braden Sharp, Wicksburg baseball’s Drew Colon, and Lincoln soccer’s Mason Hill.
As for Dooley, the senior basketball player, who was also the ITG Next Alabama March 2023 Male Athlete of the Month, helped lead Valley to yet another special season in 2023-24, one that concluded with an appearance in the Class 5A state semifinals during February.
A team that finished the year at 23-2 overall, Valley concluded February with a combined 5-1 record, with the lone loss coming to eventual state champion in the 5A Final Four, 56-50. The five victories came over Callaway (GA) to conclude the regular season, Tallassee in the 5A-Area 7 Tournament championship game, and Selma, Sylacauga, and Demopolis in the 5A state tournament.
Dooley’s impact during that span was evident for the Rams, as he averaged a combined double-double at 23.3 PPG and 13.5 RPG, along with 3.8 APG, 1.7 SPG, and 1.8 BPG.
In each of those six games, Dooley posted a double-double, with arguably his best showing coming in the 78-61 victory over out-of-state foe Callaway (GA). Dooley compiled 27 points and 17 rebounds in that victory, as well as five assists and a steal.
A few other notable performances from Dooley came in Valley’s state tournament victory over Sylacauga in which he had 29 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and two steals back on February 16, as well as in their first round 84-53 win over Selma on February 10. Against the Saints, Dooley had 25 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and five blocks.
For the 2023-24 season overall, Dooley, who is also a four-star Kentucky football signee in the 2024 class, appeared in all 25 games for the Rams, and was a key factor in their run to the Class 5A Final Four. During the year, Dooley averaged a double-double at 23 PPG and 10 RPG, while also posting season averages of 3.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, and 1.4 BPG.
In all, Dooley posted 15 double-double’s during the 2023-24 season, six of which came in February when it arguably mattered most. Dooley also had notable season-high’s that did include 40 points in a win over Lanett back on January 30, as well as 17 rebounds in the aforementioned win over Callaway on February 1.
