Among the matchups on tap for Week 9 of the 2022 Alabama high school football season, one contest in particular looms large. Here’s our preview of that game, along with some of the state’s other top pairings.
Central-Phenix City vs. Auburn
Central-Phenix City welcomes Auburn to Garrett-Harrison Stadium for an important Class 7A-Region 2 matchup. The Tigers, who are led by quarterback Clyde Pittman, come to Phenix City undefeated at 7-0 and are looking to avenge two losses to the Red Devils from a year ago. But it won’t be easy against the likes of Tomarrion Parker, AJ Harris, Karmello English, and Co. This meeting between two of the state’s top teams is definitely the headline contest in Week 9 of Alabama high school football action.
Prediction: Central-Phenix City 24, Auburn 17
Moody vs. Leeds
On the topic of unbeatens, Moody will host Leeds on Friday night in a matchup that will likely decide Class 5A-Region 6. This meeting between the Blue Devils and Greenwave could come down to the play of the Leeds defense, which has allowed only 63 points all season, against a Moody offense, led by quarterback Cole McCarty, that is averaging 49 ppg.
Prediction: Moody 35, Leeds 24
Opelika vs. Enterprise
Having lost three straight after an upset victory over Central-Phenix City, Opelika got back in the win column a week ago by defeating Smiths Station 31-14. Next up for the Bulldogs in Week 9 is yet another Class 7A-Region 2 matchup as they host an Enterprise team that has quietly won three of its last four games after a slow start to their 2022 Alabama high school football season.
Prediction: Opelika 30, Enterprise 24
Pisgah vs. Fyffe
One of the state title favorites in Class 2A, the Fyffe Red Devils (7-0) have simply been dominant so far, outscoring opponents a combined 373-39 in their undefeated season to date. The Red Devils will, however, face one of their toughest tests yet, going on the road to play a Pisgah team that is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in Class 2A-Region 7 play.
Prediction: Fyffe 35, Pisgah 17
Hartselle vs. Decatur
The Decatur Red Raiders suffered their first loss of the season a week ago, falling to Muscle Shoals by a final score of 42-28. Looking to get back on their winning ways, Decatur will travel this Friday night to Hartselle for a Class 6A Week 9 showdown in arguably their toughest test of this Alabama high school football season yet, against a Tigers team that remains undefeated at 8-0.
Prediction: Hartselle 30, Decatur 17
Williamson vs. Faith Academy
Williamson hosts Faith Academy in one of Class 5A-Region 1’s top contests of the week. The Lions (6-2) fell to the Rams a year ago by a final score of 13-7, and they’ll certainly have to come to play to avenge that loss against a Faith Academy team that enters Friday night on a five-game winning streak.
Prediction: Faith Academy 24, Williamson 14
