Top 25 Georgia High School Football Rankings: Semifinals

It’s weird putting Buford behind anyone in our Top 25 Georgia high school football rankings after watching them beat a rock-solid Lee County team this past Friday night 27-0. That was the first shutout for a Dean Fabrizio-coached Trojans team since 2007.

But, if there is one team that can claim to be maybe a little better – just a tad – it’s the Collins Hill Eagles. They destroyed a really good Lowndes team this past weekend in the quarterfinals, but the mark of this great flock of birds is how well they continued to play without one of the best players in the state in Travis Hunter. It’s going to be interesting to watch and see if anybody can unseat Collins Hill from their perch atop the standing, as they scope out their next prey.

Five of the six teams previously ranked No.4-9 were defeated, ending their season and their reign as a top-10 team in our poll. The Trojans from Leesburg fell from the No. 4 spot to No. 13. They say misery loves company, and Lee County had plenty of company with them as Marist, Mill Creek, and Westlake also fell out of the top 10, and they will now get ready for basketball.

We welcome North Oconee, Cedartown, and Dacula to the Top 25. As punk rockers The Clash once sang: “Will you stay or will you go now?” That remains the question for teams headed to the next round of the playoffs.

Rabun County, after looking almost unbeatable with Gunner Stockton, is out of the playoffs and falls out of the top spot after running into the Thomasville Bulldogs, who now sit in the No. 1 spot. ‘Dogs coach Zach Grage has his team playing perhaps their best overall brand of football at the right part of the season.

If you have any questions about Trinity Christian at the No. 2 spot, then let me assure you: The Lions are undefeated at 12-0, they are averaging 53 points per game while allowing just 8 PPG, and their closest game this season was a 34-3 win over ELCA, who, by the way, will be the Lions’ next opponent in the semifinals.

The Chargers also make one of the biggest leaps up the chart from No. 22 to No. 14. Did anyone really not think that coach Jonathan Gess would have his team making another charge toward a state title? They’ll have to find some magic if they are going to beat Trinity Christian.
