Key Losses
One of the top players Terry Parker will miss is ATH CJ Dorsey Jr., who is headed to Ferris State. He enjoyed quite a career as a Brave, with 498 yards rushing, 917 yards receiving and 5 TDs. Defensively he had 116 tackles with 12 INT, including an INT returned for a TD, and as a punt and kick returner, Dorsey had 925 combined return yards.
ATH Devon Sinclair leaves behind career states of 1,205 combined rushing and receiving yards and 7 TDs, along with 490 combined return yards as a kick and punt returner. Others who are moving on from highly productive careers at Terry Parker are RB/MLB LaShaun Mays, who is headed to Tuskegee; RB Darrell Sawyer, who is taking his talents to Warner University; FS Anthony Glover, who’s bound for Ed Waters University; and WR/OLB Khahleel Smith.
Who’s Back
The Braves welcome back starting QB Tony Kennedy, who started three games as a freshman and performed well in his brief time last season. The young signal caller threw for more than 900 yards and 7 TDs in just three games, according to head coach Mike Holloway.
Senior SS Jeffrey Brown, whose 100 tackles led the state last year, will return to his spot in the Braves defensive backfield, and he’ll also be counted on to carry the ball on offense. Another player expected to play both ways this season is SR ATH Frank German.
“He had four picks as our safety last year, and he will see a lot of time on both sides of the ball this season,” Holloway said.
The first-year head coach said senior LB David Smith will be our “man in the middle” again this season. Senior OL Shyheim Gordon returns to pave the way for the run game, while TE Mikijah Latiker is also back for another season. The 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore will also play DE.
What to Expect
With the retirement of long-time Terry Parker head coach Char-Ron Dorsey, the Braves enter the 2023 season under the leadership of Holloway, a former Dorsey assistant coach who is also the school’s head track coach. This is Holloway’s first stint as a head coach, and he told ITG Next Florida that his goals for his new team are fairly simple.
“I want our players to continue to be student athletes first,” Holloway said. “That is step number one. Then, when we hit the field, we must play fast and aggressively no matter the outcome. We need to leave it all on the field.”
The new coach takes over a team that finished with just three wins last season, so the goal may be measured in baby steps, at least to start with.
Prediction
Look for a 5-5 Terry Parker football team in 2023.
Game to Watch
The August 25 season opener against Atlantic Coast – it will be important to get the Mike Holloway era off on the right foot with a win.
