Fletcher Football 2023 Team Preview

We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Fletcher football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Senators this season.

2022 Stats

  • Overall Record: 8-3
  • Points Scored: 241
  • Points Allowed: 187

Key Losses

Fletcher says goodbye to several playmakers who enjoyed standout careers at the school. They include DB Ronald Bullard, one of three former Senators headed to Campbell University to continue their football careers. Bullard had 67 career tackles with 3 INT. Joining Bullard at Campbell will be fellow two-way standout Cornelius Davis, who had 186 yards receiving with a TD last season, while also making 96 tackles, 3 INT, 2 fumble recoveries, and a blocked FG.

The third Senator headed to Campbell is 6-foot, 7-inch DE Amari Wilson, who had 96 tackles with 7.5 sacks. DE Matteo Davis came up with 70 tackles last season and was a menace rushing the passer, as his 13.5 sacks prove. That got the attention of several schools, and Davis is headed to Albany State to play collegiately. OLB Elie Durden will take his talents to Stetson University after making 136 career tackles as a Senator.

Who’s Back

Among the key players returning for coach Ciatrick Fason and the Senators is quarterback Marcellis Tate. The 6-foot, 3-inch senior will be back for his second year as the Senators starter, and he’ll look to add to the 2,426 passing yards and 18 TDs he has so far, along with 811 yards and 12 TDs he has rushed for. He has already committed to South Florida.

RB Keandre Harold is another Campbell commit, and he’ll be back as a primary ball carrier for the Senators in 2023. The senior RB has 119 carries for 587 yards and 9 TDs so far. RT Brayden Wallace is a 6-foot, 5-inch lineman who has committed to Tennessee Tech entering his final season of high school. Senior DB Kai Reyes will be back in 2023 to round out his career, and he has already committed to attend Mercer following the 2023 season. He had 44 tackles with an INT returned for a TD last season.

What to Expect

With their key guys back on the offense and defense, the 2023 Fletcher football team will have a great chance to better its eight-win season from a year ago. Most observers were stunned to see the Senators fall out of the playoffs as quickly as they did (a 34-3 loss to Tampa Bay Tech), but now they’ll have a chance to learn from the things that brought their season to a premature end in 2022.

The Senators have one of the First Coast’s top QBs in Tate, who can hurt teams with his passing and running abilities. The defense, despite losing top DEs Wilson and Davis, will still have enough talent to stop opponents short this season.

Prediction

10-3 in 2023.

Game to Watch

September 8 against Andrew Jackson.
