Last week, we looked at the six Georgia natives who are currently part of the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 2024 recruiting class. This week the focus shifts to Georgia’s in-state rival, Georgia Tech. Similarly to UGA, the Yellow Jackets have six players from within the Peach State’s boundaries who are currently committed to play on the Flats.
Georgia Tech’s highest-rated recruit as of mid-June is athlete Trey Horne. The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee standout became known for his top-end speed after posting a 11.27 time in the 100-meter dash as a junior.
Last season, Horne was a Swiss-Army knife for the Eagles, notching over 500 rushing yards and nearly 800 receiving yards, while also forcing two fumbles defensively. He totaled 21 touchdowns from the offensive side of the football alone.
Just last week, Parkview offensive lineman Jordan Floyd committed to the Yellow Jackets. Towering at 6 feet, 6 inches and weighing 300 pounds, Floyd was instrumental to the success of Panthers running back Khyair Spain, who rushed for 2,400 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.
SEC programs including Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Kentucky pursued the high three-star prospect, but Floyd chose to stay closer to home after his official visit.
Floyd’s commitment came just three days after his Parkview teammate, athlete Trelain Maddox, selected Georgia Tech. Maddox starred as a running back and linebacker at Buford before transferring to Parkview, where he joined a talented group that includes five-star Mike Matthews and four-star cornerback Jalyn Crawford.
The Yellow Jackets plan to use Maddox’s skillset as a running back, providing depth to a room with future potential.
Not far behind Maddox is three-star QB Aaron Philo from Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart. The label of “prolific passer” fails to describe Philo’s statistical dominance: he notched 4,600 passing yards and 62 total touchdowns last season alone.
As a rising senior, Philo is already 12th all-time in career passing yards, and he needs 4,577 yards this year to pass Trevor Lawrence’s mark. Minnesota originally earned Philo’s commitment, but he soon decommitted after teammate Bailey Stockton chose the Yellow Jackets.
Two unranked recruits round out the 2024 Georgia Tech recruiting class so far: tight end David Prince and athlete Luke Harpring. The big-bodied Prince was an integral part of Glynn Academy’s passing offense, recording 607 yards receiving and seven scores en route to All-Region honors. He lined up at wide receiver for the majority of snaps, posing a stark advantage against smaller cornerbacks. Besides Georgia Tech, Prince was being pursued by Virginia Tech, UCF, and Arkansas.
As for Harpring, he developed under Georgia legend Alan Chadwick at Marist. The dual-sport athlete (he averages nearly 13 points per game in basketball) mainly played defensive end and linebacker for the War Eagles, posting 14 sacks and 70 total tackles. Georgia Tech was the only Power 5 offer Harpring received, and he is currently the most recent commit in the 2024 Georgia Tech recruiting class, having made his decision on Father’s Day.
