Region 1-AAAAAA: What’s Going On?

By the time the final buzzers sound on Friday night, the picture will be much clearer in Region 1-AAAAAA.  Not only will teams and fans know who is advancing to the postseason; they will know the exact order of seeding within the region.

Will you?

The way that the 2015 season has played out leaves room for some interesting results in the seeding.  So, in an attempt to ease the headaches of trying to figure out where your favorite team could end the season, we have compiled a “cheat sheet” that should answer any questions you may have.

The Colquitt County Packers and Camden County Wildcats have secured the top two seeds in Region 1-AAAAAA.  Neither team can fall lower due to the fact that, prior to their meeting tonight, both are undefeated in region play.  The winner of tonight’s game will remain undefeated and take the top seed in the region; the losing team would drop to the second seed.

Now, the real chaos ensues.  Four teams in the region are battling for the remaining two slots in the postseason.  Valdosta (6-3 overall, 2-2 in region play), Lee County (6-3, 1-3), Lowndes (5-4, 1-3), and Tift County (5-4, 0-4) are all in a position where they could sneak into one of these spots.

If both Lee County and Lowndes win, they would then be in a three-way tie with Valdosta, earning a final region record of 2-3.  The tiebreaker would lead to more confusion: In head-to-head matchups, each team would have an identical record as well (1-1).  The next step in the decision process is to look at the points allowed by the teams within the equation.  As of Friday, they are as follows:

  • Valdosta: 7 (allowed against Lowndes)
  • Lee County: 42 (allowed against Lowndes)
  • Lowndes: 24 (17 allowed against Valdosta; 7 allowed against Lee County)

In this scenario, the two teams that allowed the fewest points against the other two opponents would receive playoff spots.  A similar situation could occur if Valdosta wins and Lowndes loses.  This would guarantee the Wildcats the third spot; however, there would then be a three-way tie between Lee County, Lowndes, and Tift County (who would all sit at 1-4).

The points allowed by each team in this group are as follows:

  • Lee County: 56 (42 allowed against Lowndes; 14 allowed against Tift County)
  • Lowndes: 7 (allowed against Lee County)
  • Tift County: 42 (allowed against Lee County)

In the end, Friday night’s action is sure to be wild.  To sum up the madness that is Region 1-AAAAAA:

  • Valdosta clinches a playoff spot if:
    • Valdosta wins
    • Valdosta loses and Lowndes loses
    • Lowndes wins and Valdosta loses by less than 35
  • Lee County clinches a playoff spot if:
    • Lee County wins and a Lowndes loses
    • Lowndes wins and Lee County wins by 36 points or more
    • Lee County loses, Lowndes allows 50 or more in a loss, and Tift County allows 15 or more points
  • Lowndes clinches a playoff spot if:
    • Lowndes wins
    • Valdosta wins and Lowndes loses by less than 35 points
  • Tift County clinches a playoff spot if:
    • Valdosta wins and Tift County wins by 36 points or more while allowing less than 15 points
