From Pom-Poms to the Pitch

For Waycross Middle School’s Malaya Porter, the season determines whether she is kicking, catching, tumbling, or helping support her teammates’ weight on her shoulders. Porter, “Lay Lay” to friends, is a two sport athlete: A base on the cheerleading team, she is also a center forward for the WMS soccer team and plays center forward and goal keeper for her travel soccer team.

“My first big play was in about the fourth grade,” she said. “It was against a travel team in Jacksonville, Florida. It was my first time playing a position other than goalie during a game. When I was allowed to play the center-forward position, I scored my first ever two goals, and that was when I fell in love with being a center-forward.”
