Midseason Report: Alabama High School Basketball Title Favorites

As we near the midway point of the 2022-23 Alabama high school basketball season, here are our picks for state title favorites in each boys and girls classification.

7A

  • Boys – Grissom
  • Girls – Hoover

As hinted at before, Alabama high school basketball boys 7A might be the deepest classification in the state, but if a pick needs to made from title favorites at this point, Grissom just might be the team, as the Tigers have lost to only one in-state team so far. On the girls side, it feels like either Hoover or Vestavia Hills is the pick, but I’ll go with the Buccaneers here, considering they have won the last two state titles in 7A.

6A

  • Boys – Pinson Valley
  • Girls – Hazel Green

You could make an argument that Class 6A is the easiest to forecast of any classification, with five-time defending state champion Hazel Green the clear pick on the girls side. As for the boys, it’s Pinson Valley, a team that is still unbeaten at the time of this writing.

5A

  • Boys – Valley
  • Girls – Guntersville

In Alabama high school basketball Class 5A, the picks for favorites are not as easy to make as in 6A, with Guntersville being the lone repeat state champion selected here. As for the boys side, few teams have impressed more than Valley, with the Rams remaining unbeaten to date.

4A

  • Boys – Westminster Christian
  • Girls – Good Hope

There are a few different teams to choose from on for both the boys and girls in Class 4A, with the picks going to Westminster Christian and Good Hope. The Wildcats have yet to lose to a 4A opponent this season, while Good Hope has been one of the most impressive girls teams in the state so far this season.

3A

  • Boys – Plainview
  • Girls – Trinity Presbyterian

On the boys side of Class 3A, there are a few other teams to potentially choose from, but the pick goes to Plainview, the defending state champion. On the girls side of the classification, Trinity Presbyterian gets the nod.

2A

  • Boys – Aliceville
  • Girls – Cold Springs

Aliceville is the pick on the boys side, along with Cold Springs for the girls. The Eagles have been one of the state’s most impressive girls teams this season, sitting at an unbeaten 15-0 at the time of this writing.

1A

  • Boys – Covenant Christian
  • Girls – Spring Garden

Our look at Alabama high school basketball title favorites concludes with Class 1A, where the boys pick goes to defending state champion Covenant Christian, who are enjoying yet another strong season. On the girls side, undefeated Spring Garden is the choice.
