We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Marietta High football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Blue Devils this season.
2022 Stats
- Overall Record: 5-7
- Points Scored: 236
- Points Allowed: 253
Key Losses
Marietta loses some key members of the program who were multiyear starters, including standout DB Jace Arnold, who is set to play cornerback at Wisconsin. Arnold signed with the Badgers this offseason to begin his collegiate career.
Wide receiver Christian Mathis is one of the key offensive talents who will not return. He winds up with 1,948 career receiving yards and 23 TDs while at Marietta, and he will continue his career at East Tennessee State. Two-way talent Nakari Ashley will be missed on both sides of the ball, finishing his career with 130 tackles as a FS, while contributing 479 receiving yards and 4 TDs as a receiver at Marietta.
Nose guard Broderick Tomme and Center/LS Jake Maggard will be missed on their respective sides of the line at Marietta, while the Blue Devils also are searching for a replacement for kicker Ben Parrot, who graduated.
Who’s Back
The Blue Devils of head coach Richard Morgan will welcome back senior QB Chase McCravey, who has thrown for 3,437 yards and 23 TDs in his career. He also has added 497 rushing yards and 8 TDs. Morgan’s favorite target will likely be returning junior WR Brandon Rasado, who caught 23 passes for 207 yards last year while playing in the shadow of Mathis. Look for his numbers to climb as he becomes the Devils’ primary receiver in 2023.
Senior RB Jayken Frazier is back to handle the bulk of the rushing duties for Marietta, while Russell Bey will join him in the backfield again this season. Junior DE Anthony Kruah returns after enjoying a breakout season in 2022, when he recorded 50 tackles and 5 sacks.
What to Expect
Look for Morgan to get his 2023 Marietta football team back on track this season. He led the Blue Devils back from a four-game losing streak last season to finish with four wins in their final six games, including an impressive playoff win over the Newton Rams. Despite a 5-7 overall record, Marietta took care of business in region play, finishing as the #2 seed in 3-7A. Look for an improved Blue Devils team to compete for the top seed in their region this season.
Prediction
Marietta finishes 9-4 with a trip to the Class 7A quarterfinals.
Game to Watch
Actually, it’s not just one game to watch; the three-game stretch against Roswell, North Cobb, and Buford in Weeks 2, 3 and 4 could be the difference in Marietta’s season in 2023.
