Making History in the Sooner State

Joe Martel III is making history in Oklahoma.  As a member of the Beggs High Demons football team, he is the first double amputee to play the sport in Oklahoma’s prep history.

Joe, currently a freshman defensive end for Beggs, was born with a condition known as tibial hemmimelia, which is a characterized by the absence of the shin bone.  The condition affected both of Joe’s legs, and at only 18 months old, he had both of his legs partially amputated.

This hasn’t stopped his desire to perform.  He practices, plays, and competes with the team on a daily basis.  He wears prosthetic legs on Friday nights, but he can even be seen at practice with the team, running the stadium stairs without them.

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Athletic Association confirmed that Joe is the first double amputee to compete at the junior varsity level.  He has also already seen time on the varsity stage in his freshman year.  His presence is highly regarded given his age; Beggs’ varsity team has gone to the state quarterfinals in each of the past two years.

His determination has proven to be an inspiration for his teammates and the community.  As said on the football team’s Twitter account, there are only two things that we can control: our attitude and our effort.  And Joe Martel III is a prime example of making the absolute best of every opportunity.
