Lowndes High standout lands scholarship in Miami

0415 FF 01Lowndes High senior Haylee Gordon is headed to Miami. It’s going to be a few months but once she finishes her final soccer season with the Vikettes, she will be moving south to what amounts to another world. It’s a land of warm weather, seeming eternal sunshine, year ‘round beaches, and some very good soccer. Gordon ought to fit in nicely at her chosen school, Johnson and Wales University, located in North Miami. She has enjoyed an excellent career at Lowndes, played for the South Georgia United soccer club, and been a member of the Olympic Development Program. One of her goals to land a college scholarship, which she did when Johnson and Wales came calling. Here is Gordon’s career summarized by a few key numbers:

17: Haylee Gordon’s age

4: Number of positions Gordon has played with Lowndes: Outside back, forward, outside mid, and center back.

7: Number of years Gordon has been playing soccer. She started when she was in the sixth grade and immediately fell in love with the game.

3: The total number of championships she has won with the South Georgia United: Athena D, E, and F

2: Number of region championships Gordon has won with Lowndes. The Vikettes won the region in 2012 and 2013.

25: Though primarily a defensive player, Gordon has scored 25 goals in her career.

50: Gordon’s number of career assists.

90: Average number of minutes Gordon plays during a game. In other words, she never comes out.

6: Estimated number of miles Gordon runs during each soccer game.

206th: Gordon’s ranking in the Class of 2015. She holds a 3.7 grade point average and is on pace to graduate with honors.

12.5: Hours per week Gordon practices soccer.

97: Gordon’s class in Georgia’s Olympic Development Program. As a member of Georgia ODP 97, Gordon played with and against the best soccer players in the country in her age group. She was one of three Vikettes to play with ODP during her career at Lowndes.

11th: The grade Gordon was in when she decided she wanted to really get serious about soccer. The game clicked for her between her sophomore and junior year, and that’s when she made up her mind that she wanted to pursue soccer long-term.

4 (again): How many games Lowndes had played at the time she and I spoke.

2: How many games Lowndes had won. The Vikettes were 2-1-1; one of their wins was against a region opponent.

431: The number of miles between Valdosta and Johnson and Wales University.
