After a slate of games that officially kicked off the 2024 Florida high school football season, let’s take a look back at some of the state’s top individual performers from Week 1.
Owen Klees, Quarterback – Wakulla War Eagles
Owen Klees had one of the state’s top quarterback performances in Week 1, completing 16-of-20 passes for 323 yards and six touchdowns in Wakulla’s 41-14 win over Port St. Joe. The junior also rushed for 12 yards on one attempt and had two punts for 80 yards combined.
Bjorn Jurgensen, Quarterback – Bishop Moore Hornets
Bjorn Jurgensen, a three-star Virginia commit, completed 19-of-26 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns in Bishop Moore’s 45-40 win over Oviedo, while also throwing for an interception. The signal-caller also enjoyed a big day on the ground, rushing for 82 yards and two touchdowns on six attempts.
Jayden Miller, Quarterback – NSU University Sharks
Jayden Miller was perfect throwing the ball in NSU University’s 51-7 win over Coral Springs Charter, completing 13-of-13 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore also had two carries for 16 yards on the ground.
Phillip Jones Jr., Linebacker – Immaculata-La Salle Royal Lions
Phillip Jones Jr., a sophomore linebacker at Immaculata-La Salle, enjoyed a big defensive showing in the Royal Lions’ 40-7 victory at Miami. In the win, Jones compiled 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, four sacks, and a forced fumble.
Landin Williams, Running Back – Bell Bulldogs
Landin Williams was a key factor in Bell’s 34-24 victory over Trenton, rushing for 195 yards and four touchdowns on 20 attempts.
Kadin Hanifen, Linebacker – Middleburg Broncos
Kadin Hanifen amassed 19 total tackles, nine of which were solo, along with one sack in the Broncos’ 13-0 shutout win over Westside.
Samari Reed, Athlete – Monarch Knights
Samari Reed, a four-star Ole Miss commit, rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns on 17 attempts in Monarch’s 30-29 victory over Georgia program Peachtree Ridge. The senior also amassed 21 yards on four receptions and returned a kickoff for 25 yards.
Derrick Ferguson, Athlete – Southwest Miami Eagles
Derrick Ferguson, a two-way player for Class 6A’s Southwest Miami, rushed for 100 yards and four touchdowns on 10 attempts in the Eagles’ 41-6 victory over Coral Park. The senior also had two tackles defensively and one forced fumble.
Alvin Lee, Linebacker – Miami Killian Cougars
Alvin Lee made an impact defensively in Miami Killian’s 29-0 shutout victory against Everglades Prep Academy, recording seven tackles, five tackles for loss, and 2 ½ sacks.
Nicolas Salas, Kicker – Bishop Moore Hornets
Nicolas Salas was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra point attempts in Bishop Moore’s 45-40 win against Oviedo, and he made his lone field goal attempt from 22 yards out.
