Key, Bailey among Top Players in Florida High School Football Week 2

Week 2 of the 2022 Florida high school football season brought some memorable individual performances across the state. We take a look back at last Friday night to single out the top players and assess the impact they had on their teams’ fortunes.

Michael Key – Seminole

Key had a noteworthy impact on Seminole’s 28-27 win over Osceola last Friday night, catching 10 passes for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns. Key also carried the ball for a 1-yard touchdown.

Cedrick Bailey – Chaminade-Madonna

Chaminade-Madonna picked up an impressive 49-28 win over Dillard on Friday night and Bailey was a big reason why. Against a tough Dillard defense, the Lions quarterback completed 21-of-32 pass attempts for 354 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also rushing for 26 yards and a score on four attempts.

Edwin Joseph – Chaminade-Madonna

Joseph was Bailey’s main target in the Dillard game, catching 9 passes for 177 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Holden Johnson – Eastside

The second quarterback on this list, Johnson helped lead Eastside to an impressive 26-0 win over Keystone Heights, completing 9-of-15 passes for 237 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Malachi Hawkins – Marathon

Hawkins, a two-way player, helped lead Marathon to a 35-13 win over Miami Country Day by rushing for 231 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. He also completed a pass for 7 yards and collected 3 tackles and a sack defensively.

Trevor Velasco – Riverside Christian

Velasco enjoyed a big game on both sides of the ball in a losing effort (38-22 to Impact Christian) for Riverside Christian. He carried the ball 31 times for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns, had 2 catches for 10 yards, and collected 13 tackles, 2 TFL, and an interception defensively.

Zaire Davis – Harvest Community

The final name on this list of top performers in Week 2 of the 2022 Florida high school football season is Davis, who rushed for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns on 4 carries in a 28-8 win over Eagle’s View. He also collected 5 tackles with a fumble recovery on defense.
