ITG-SG Top 5’s of Week 8

Week 8 Top 5s

TOP 5 PLAYERS:

Week 8 was one of incredible quarterback play and surprising region blowouts, yielding some crazy numbers on both sides of the ball. And, for the first time this year, a special teams player of extraordinary talent finds his place amongst our Top 5 Players of the Week.Topping our list this week is QB Demontay Jones of Brooks County. Brooks, despite dropping 2 games early on in the year, has rallied to a 5-2 (3-0) standing. Jones was the centerpiece of this talented Brooks squad on Friday, showing off his legs and his arm. However, they will travel to the buzzsaw that is Fitzgerald on Friday night.

In a shock to everyone except for Colquitt’s confident fan base, the Packers went to Leesburg and blew out and the Trojans, 54-17. While a Colquitt win was no surprise, the amount of points put up by the potent Packer attack, led by Chase Parrish, against an impressive Lee squad wasn’t as easily predictable. With that said, Parrish continues to consistently deliver to stud receivers like Kiel Pollard, showing that the Packer offense has been in mid-season form . Be sure to read our Story of the Week on these two incredible student athletes.

Landing at 3rd and making his second appearance on our Top 5 this season is Valwood QB, Jake Parker. Coming off of a bruised rib injury, Parker showed that the setback isn’t going to negatively affect his play or his team’s ability to win games by sizable margins. His size, speed, and growing experience in the passing game continue to prove to be too much for defenses across the GISA. While Parker puts up impressive numbers individually, he certainly isn’t alone as he is accompanied by Jack Helms and Sam Martin in the backfield and Maysoe Wiley out wide.

Dameon Pierce is a work-horse, plain and simple. Grinding out over 7 yards per carry, you can easily understand why he is carrying the ball 27 times per game. His 190 yards and 4 TDs, combined with his season total, put him in good company amongst the other elite running backs across the South Georgia area.

Lastly, a special teams player finally makes his way into our Top 5! Luis Martinez truly is a remarkable talent that will be given the chance to kick at the next level, if he so desires. Having experienced first-hand Luis’ power, accuracy, and consistency in the kicking game (despite the miserable conditions against Lowndes), I believe that he is every bit deserving of this accolade and more, boasting 4 FGs and 8 touchbacks in a single night.

Honorable Mention: Cook RB Brandon Doe, who had 133 yards rushing and 4 TDs, all in the first half.

TOP 5 TEAMS:

I may have already stated how impressive Colquitt was in their win over Lee, but it easily merits a second mention. Lee, who was highly exalted by fans and media (ourselves included) alike, was embarrassed on their home turf. Despite eagerly anticipating this match-up as the prime chance to prove themselves, Lee simply couldn’t hang with the clearly superior Packers. Even though the Trojans jumped on Colquitt early, Colquitt surged with insatiable fury, producing mass quantities of points while allowing almost none.

With that said, what was an extremely impressive statement win for Colquitt doesn’t necessarily dismiss Lee from the conversation. It could be said, and is my opinion, that this game more so displayed Colquitt’s dominance than it did Lee’s ineptitude. Therefore, we knocked down Lee from their #2 spot, but did not dismiss them completely from our list. Lee still has a great chance to secure the 2nd spot in Region 1-6A, putting them in striking distance of the state title.

The rest of our list remains unchanged. Fitzgerald was off, Bainbridge continues to handle their business with relative ease, and Valwood has yet to meet their equal within GISA. Endurance now becomes the primary factor for every team. Will region play week in and week out grind away at the health of key players? Will the mental wear and tear prove too much for any of these programs or young men? As the end of the regular season quickly approaches, only time will tell.

* Our criteria is NOT creating hypothetical matchups amongst teams in an effort to crown a champion; that is settled on the field within each respective division, from A to AAAAAA. Since high school, unlike college, crowns multiple champions per year, our Top 5 is meant to highlight great teams who are excelling within their schedules, regardless of classification. It would be unreasonable and unfair to eliminate teams in lower classifications from our Top 5 simply because of that fact. We can only hold teams accountable to whether or not they are impressively performing against the teams that they are scheduled to play. In short, our criteria is based upon projecting performances and the likelihood of championships, regardless of classification.
