We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Glynn Academy football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.

2021 Stats

  • Overall Record: 4-6-1
  • Points Scored: 226
  • Points Against: 228

Key Losses

The Red Terrors saw a host of starters and key contributors from last season’s team graduate, and will have to find replacements for them. The group includes starting RB John Moody, who showed how talented he can be in his 2021 breakout performance against Camden County. Despite his Red Terrors losing to the Wildcats, Moody carried the ball 24 times for 173 yards and a TD in the game.

Another great story last season for Glynn Academy was WR/CB Tyson Rooks. The senior had not played football in several seasons, deciding to play basketball, instead. But teammates and coaches convinced him to come out and put the pads on for his senior season, and right away college recruiters began to see the potential in the 6-foot-4 receiver and safety.

He began to receive interest from college programs, despite not having played one snap of football in 2021. Rooks did not disappoint, showing that he was the player everyone thought. It would be the Fighting Illini of Illinois that stepped up and offered Rooks a scholarship to come play football, and Rooks accepted. He enrolled at Illinois in May of 2022.

Others who will be missed in 2022 include center Jaquez Randolph, and defensive linemen DJ Clinch and Caldon Mattox, both First-Team All-Region selections.

Who’s Back

Returning to the Red Terrors and Coach Rocky Hidalgo this season will be senior QB/FS Tyler Devlin, who is a good fit for Glynn Academy’s run-heavy single-wing offense with his solid throwing ability, as well as his quickness and good speed. The 5-foot-11 170-pound dual-sport athlete was the focus of a story in the Brunswick News that declared Devlin as “the best passing QB Glynn has had since Hidalgo took over the Terrors eight seasons ago.”

One of Devlin’s favorite targets at WR will be David Prince, and sophomore Greg Peacock turned heads last year as a ninth-grader. University of Central Florida Assistant Director of Player Personnel Alex Mathis posted highlights of Peacock’s freshman season on Twitter, and said of the standout ATH, “Not many 14-year-olds are doing what Greg Peacock [is] doing at this level of high school football in Georgia. He should still be playing middle school football.” Peacock will be one to watch in 2022. Also returning this season are LB DeVontae Long and OL Jack Hunt.

What To Expect

This is the best collection of talent Hidalgo has had in a while at Glynn Academy, and with perhaps the best QB he has ever had in Devlin, the veteran coach may want to consider taking the reigns off of his playmakers and open things up a bit offensively. Of course, no one expects Glynn Academy to suddenly abandon the run-first mentality, but revamping things just a bit could make for an interesting season, and get the Red Terrors back on track. Last season was one fans don’t want to have to go through a season like the 4-6-1 campaig of 2021 again.

Prediction

I see a Red Terror team inspired in 2022: I see a 10-win season.
