The big moment is finally upon us.

The Colquitt County Packers are a mere one game away from back-to-back state titles and undefeated seasons.  Should the feat be accomplished, Colquitt County would join Lowndes (2005-06) and Camden County (2008-09) as the only South Georgia schools to win consecutive titles since 1990.

Colquitt, however, would be the first South Georgia school since the creation of Class AAAAAA to accomplish the feat, putting them in a unique class of their own.

Last week, the defending champions sent the Mill Creek Hawks packing after handing them a 52-31 defeat on the road.  The Packers had to travel for two consecutive weeks, but the obstacle proved to be nothing more than a stepping-stone toward the final frontier.

Leading the way for the Pack was senior quarterback Chase Parrish, whose six touchdown passes tied a school record.  After a first half in which he threw two interceptions, he clearly redeemed himself in the second, throwing for 288 yards and four touchdowns.  He finished the night with 431 yards, eclipsing the former record of 354 (held by Tyler Brown and Cole Segraves).

Contributing to Colquitt’s offense were stellar performances from receivers Kiel Pollard (127 receiving yards) and Ty Lee (135).  Defensively, Akivie Blakely led the way with two sacks, including a crucial one late in the game that would help to keep the Packers ahead for good.

Awaiting the Packers in Atlanta will be the Region 5-AAAAAA champions, the Roswell Hornets.  Again, Colquitt will be tasked with knocking off an undefeated team; Roswell’s late come-from-behind win over the Grayson Rams in the semifinals pushed their record to 14-0 as well.

Controlling turnovers will be a key to the matchup; Roswell managed to overcome four fumbles against Grayson to secure a win last week.  Leading the way for the Hornets will be a pair of Division-I commits, future Clemson linebacker Tre Lamar, and junior defensive back Xavier McKinney, who has committed to Alabama.

The Packers have clearly established themselves as the elite team in South Georgia.  Last season, they proved that their talent was worthy of both state- and nationwide recognition.  A win on Saturday would leave no doubt that Colquitt County is among the greatest football organizations in today’s prep scene.
