Lowndes Track Athlete Kaniya Johnson Voted ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month

Kaniya Johnson of the Lowndes High School track team is our ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month. She was our top vote-getter among three other female candidates seeking the Athlete of the Month award.

Johnson joined the Lowndes track and field team this year after moving to Lowndes County from South Carolina, where she was a top track athlete for her high school there, according to Lowndes girls track coach Joe Robinson.

“Kaniya came to us this year from Columbia, South Carolina, where she was a standout track athlete for her team at White Knoll High,” Robinson said. “She was a two-time state champion in the 100-meter dash and one-time state champion in the 200-meter dash.”

Johnson picked up right where she left off since arriving at Lowndes this year and has continued to dominate Georgia track and field events. She led her Lowndes team to the Region 1-7A championship, winning the girls 100M and 200M. She repeated that same dominant performance at the state finals that just wrapped up, winning the state championship in the 100M and 200M events. She actually broke the state record in the 100M with a time of 11.26 seconds.

Johnson was also a member of two other state championship-winning teams for Lowndes: the 4×100 relay team with a time of 45.93 seconds, and the 4×400 relay team, with a time of 3:43:29, which set the state record in the 400, and was the second-fastest time in the country. The Lowndes girls track team won the Class 7A State track championship.

In addition to her dominance at the state high school level, Johnson is also one of the top national indoor and outdoor track athletes, as her performance in the Millrose Games in New York proved earlier this year. Although the 100M and 200M dash are her primary events, Kaniya won the 300M at the Millrose games with a time of 37.75 seconds and came in second place in the 60M dash with a time of 7.34 seconds.

Johnson also out-performed the competition earlier at the New Balance HS Indoor Nationals, taking first place in the 200M with a time of 24.02 seconds. She is an indoor and outdoor high school All-American, according to Robinson.

Robinson said Johnson is always doing the little things right.

“Kaniya comes to practice ready to work everyday,” he said. “She works extremely hard in the weight room and is always challenging herself.”

Johnson signed a full scholarship with Florida State University earlier this year, and she’ll continue her promising track career in Tallahassee with the Seminoles track team.

Congratulations to Kaniya Johnson on her Athlete of the Month honor!
