Georgia Female Athlete of the Month: Darlington Softball Player Audrey Abbott

The Darlington School Softball Player Audrey Abbott Named ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month for September 2023

Congratulations to The Darlington School softball standout Audrey Abbott, who is our September 2023 ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month, presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance. Abbott received the most votes among our four standout nominees, who were all selected for consideration for the honor based on their outstanding performance through the first month of their respective seasons.

In addition to Abbott, nominees were Heritage School softball standout Addie Edwards; Diamond Leslie, a standout player on the Centennial softball team; and North Cobb volleyball team member Hannah Nicholson, one of the Warriors’ top players.

According to Darlington head softball coach Anna Harris, Abbott has been a major force with the Tigers softball program over her entire high school career, beginning with her freshman season.

“I’ve coached Audrey for four seasons now, and she has made a huge impact on the Darlington softball program,” coach Harris said.

The Tigers head coach talked about Abbott’s impact at the plate and in the field.

“After 13 games so far this season, she is leading the team with a .581 average with 8 singles, 13 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 home runs,” Harris said. “She also leads the team with 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

The coach said anytime Abbott steps up to the plate, she can be counted on to produce: “There’s always a high chance that Audrey is going to come through with the big hit.”

But Abbott is the complete player, and just as good in the field as her performance has been over her career at the plate. According to coach Harris, Abbott mainly plays shortstop, but she will also pitch when the team needs her to.

“Her defense is always consistent, with a .942 fielding percentage and 36 putouts with 4 double plays turned so far,” Harris said. “She is a steady and confident defender who communicates and leads her teammates well.”.

Abbott told ITG Next Georgia that being selected as the Athlete of the Month validated her hard work.

“It feels great to be noticed,” Abbot said. “I have been putting in countless hours of work on and off the field, and earning this recognition really proved to me that hard work will pay off in the end.”

Abbott has been heavily recruited and has verbally committed to Augusta University, according to coach Harris.

“I expect nothing but great things from her at the next level,” Harris said. “She is very deserving of the Athlete of the Month award.”

ITG Next congratulates Darlington softball standout Audrey Abbott for being selected as our September 2023 ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month, presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance, and we wish her the best as she takes her game to the next level in college.
