Female Football Referee Makes Texas High School History

History has been made in Texas high school football. Female football referee Crystal Cooksey became the first woman to officiate a Texas high school state championship game on Jan. 5.

The 1A-Division II state title game between Balmorhea and Richland Springs saw Cooksey, an 11-year veteran of the Dallas Football Officials Association, realize one of her dreams.

“This is all of our dreams, to be able to work a state championship game,” she said to local news outlet WFAA8.

History was also made for Balmorhea as they snapped Richland Springs’ 26-game winning streak to capture their first state title by a score of 74-38.
