Carroll Taking It One Shot at a Time

Name: Cody Carroll

School: Middleburg High School

GPA: 4.1

Sport: Golf

Cody Carroll is a senior at Middleburg High School and has had a progressing golf career since he was a little kid. He credited his passion for golf to his parents, who bought him his first golf clubs.

“I started playing golf when I was only 3,” he said. “My parents bought me a little plastic set of golf clubs as a toy, only I didn’t treat it like a toy; I played with the golf clubs exclusively for over three months. When I was 4, they bought me my first set of real clubs, and all I’ve wanted to do ever since is to play and practice golf.”

Carroll finds his inspiration in the pro athletes. He said that he feels lucky to have grown up watching them play.

“Tiger Woods inspires me because of how much he dominated his sport,” he said. “I think every junior golfer aspires to dominate like Tiger did. I’m honored to have grown up in his era.”

Carroll wants to follow in Woods’ footsteps. If Carroll thinks he has a shot at going pro like Woods, then he is not going to hesitate to take it.

“I definitely have plans to go pro as long as I keep improving,” Carroll said. “I’m verbally committed to the University of North Florida on a golf scholarship. I considered Florida, South Florida, Central Florida, Ole Miss, and Liberty, as well as UNF.”

To have a successful career in his sport, Carroll has a specific strategy he implements in every game to ensure he either comes out on top or knows that he tried his best to do so.

“I try to play every shot one at a time,” he said. “If you get ahead of yourself and start looking into the future or dwelling on the past, you are setting yourself up for failure.”

Another strategy Carroll uses is to never give up and work hard for his goals. He thinks that the extra time he puts in makes him stand out from the rest.

“I’m a real hard worker,” he said. “When other kids are at home or hanging with friends, I’m putting in those extra hours on the course.”

He also says that apart from working hard and putting in extra course time, his coach, Dan Carraher, has really impacted his golf career.

“My swing coach, Dan Carraher, has made a huge impact on my golf game,” he said. “Without him I don’t think I would have the mechanics as solid as they are, nor would I be as highly ranked as I am now.”

Carroll’s favorite memory in his high school career can be chalked up to wining the state championship as a junior. He said that he felt honored to play against other players and gave it all he had to end up on top.

“Winning the FHSAA state championship as a junior was amazing,” he said. “Earning the honor of beating everyone and other high school golfers in the state is one of the highest achievements you can accomplish.”

Even earlier, Carroll remembers winning the first tournament he ever played in.

“My most memorable moment from playing golf would have to be winning my first tournament at age 6,” he said. “I remember making a 10-foot putt on the final hole to win and running to my dad to give him a hug. I’ve accomplished bigger things, but it was definitely the most memorable.”

Besides his dream of becoming a professional golfer, Carroll also likes the idea of teaching others about the sport too.

“I can see myself coaching a college golf team,” he said. “As much as I love competing, I would love to push kids in the right direction and win some tournaments as a coach, not only as a player.”

For others interested in playing golf, Carroll had a few words of advice.

“My advice for others is to stay patient,” he said. “Golf is the toughest sport out there. You’re not gonna get good fast. Stay patient and committed to the process, and results will come.”
