Key Losses
RB Kamari Moulton was a consistent threat for the Chiefs rushing attack over his career, and his 2,325 career rushing yards and 30 TDs prove it. He signed with Iowa following his successful high school career. QB Dylan Rizk was solid running DuBuc’s passing attack the last couple of seasons, throwing for 3,958 yards and 35 TDs while completing 66% of his pass attempts. He has taken his talents to the University of Central Florida Knights.
One of the top long snappers in the state, Trey DuBuc, has graduated, and his special set of skills will definitely be missed on the Chiefs’ special teams. The University of South Florida Bulls recognized those skills, and signed the specialist following his senior season. Defensive back Adonis Allen will be missed in the secondary, but he’ll also continue his football career at the next level, at Webber University.
Who’s Back
The Chiefs will return several key players from last year’s squad, especially on the offense, and that’s good news for Chiefs head coach Matt DuBuc, an offensive guru who can get the most from his players, especially his quarterback. He’ll have a Division 1-ready prospect to run his offense as senior Michael Merdinger, who is committed to North Carolina, takes over at QB.
One of the top receiving targets for Merdinger will be another major college commit, tight end Colton Heinrich. He’ll be headed to UGA following this season in Fort Lauderdale. Other receivers returning for the Chiefs are Antonio Lindsey, who has 55 catches over the last two seasons, and rising junior Trent DuBuc. RB Patrick Anderson is a three-star recruit who will give the Chiefs a solid threat in their rushing attack this year.
Defensively, CG is stout with two top-tier DBs in Casey Etienne and Guy Edmond. Both have received several offers, and they should keep most opponents’ passing games at bay this year.
What to Expect
DuBuc has led the Chiefs to three state championships, and after coming up short last season in the Class 2M region title game, the Chiefs head coach is hoping this year’s team can make another run at the top.
“I’m excited about this team,” DuBuc told ITG Next earlier this offseason. “These players have really bought into our plan, and it has shown. This spring has been fun.”
DuBuc said the team seems to be very strong in all areas, but especially on offense: “We have a QB with a high IQ and a strong arm, and overall we’ll be very fast on offense this year.”
Prediction
The talent is there to make a run in Class 2M. The Chiefs finish 12-2 this year.
Game to Watch
The Chiefs will play another Cardinal Gibbons football team in 2023, the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders of Raleigh, NC, on August 25 in the Broward County National High School Football Showcase.
